Apple, Microsoft

Is the Apple announcements that Big a deal?

I have gotten some comments by readers that ask why I hate Apple. The plain fact of the matter is I don’t, but what they hate is criticism of their beloved company. I call Microsoft and other companies to task all the time here. I don’t discriminate I am a equal opportunity call them to the carpet writer.

One question I was asked today is how come I don’t cover the good stuff Apple is doing, well I hate to say it, what they are doing is nothing revolutionary. They are changing chip sets to give Apple users more speed under the hood with less heat and more battery reserve. Well hello hate to point this out but what do you think computer manufactures have been doing in the PC space for a long time.

The only thing I see cool on the hardware front is their power plug, thats innovation everything else is a company that have had a series of computers that have been underpowered for a long time. Mac users are finally going to be able to enjoy the same computing speed many of us have enjoying in the PC world for a very long time.

Has Apple given us anything this year at MacWorld that takes computing to the next level, I don’t thinks so. Has Microsoft brought us anything in recent times that takes us to the next level, I don’t think so. So before I get more hate mail, I don’t hate Apple sure I don’t use my Mini that much but guess what I have a full sweet of great tools that do what I need them to do. The mac operating system does not make me more productive in fact I would say it’s about equal and I will say it again a computer is a computer is a computer. The majority of people that are buying PC’s are surfing the net, writing letters, doing a little book keeping, editing some pictures and a few are editing audio. Guess what I have been doing those items since the release of the Windows 3.1 and it is not rocket science folks, it really isn’t.

If you want to pay a premium from a single source vendor to delivery what is admittedly a pretty computer then so be it. But don’t try to convince me that the operating system is superior or the applications will cause me to be more productive because guess what I’m not drinking the Koolaid and I will be able to buy 2 machines for every one that I could buy from Apple. That saves me money and with four kids that are growing up fast I can outfit them each with a PC and they will be as productive at a fraction of the cost.

    Todd,

You might remember me. I’m the person who sent you some Logo Creation software for your Mac Mini over the summer. I don’t know if I ever told you exactly why I sent it to you, but I figured that this was the perfect time to tell you. I sent you the software because I got rid of my Mac. Why did I get rid of my Mac? Because, as you say, a computer is a computer is a computer. There is no way around it. For what I do, and for what most people do on computers, it does not matter one single bit if I am working on a Mac or a PC.

I have never heard you say on bad thing about Apple that is not true. I have never heard you say one bad thing about Microsoft that isn’t true. Why do people get all over you for talking about Apple when you say bad things about Microsoft. Frankly, you talk much worse about Microsoft than you do about Apple. And rightly so, because for the most part Microsoft gives people more of a reason to complain. But Apple has its fair share of problems also.

You are not alone by any means if you think that the keynote on Tuesday was disapointing. I was personally very disapointed that they did not release an Intel Mac Mini PVR solution, and from reading all of the Mac forums I can see that I’m not the only one who is disapointed. Apple has a great product in the iPod. It is not unique, but I will say that it is probably the best MP3 player that I have ever used. Besides the iPod though, they have not done anything to be proud of. (I do agree completely with you in the fact that their power cord for the Macbook is pretty cool though.) Apple is doing now what other computer manufactures have been doing for years. Why should they get praise for doing something that they should have done a long time ago.

Steve Jobs said that since the inception of OSX they have been producing and Intel based version of it right alongside the PowerPC version. If that really is the case then I think that they shouldn’t have waited so long to switch to Intel.

Anyways, sorry that this comment skipped all over the place, but I had to get some of those things off my chest. I can’t wait for the podcast tomorrow! Thanks for all you do!

That’s a pretty poor argument Todd..
If that’s the case then all the podcasters that use the free Garageband app and a USB mic to create a podcast while you feel you need thousands of dollars of equipment to create a simple podcast must have 8 kids to raise and cannot afford the expensive mixers and compressors and mics. You just drank the podcast kool-aid. We all know that’s not true. Neither is most the argument you made above.

MacWorld is more then Apple, it’s the hundreds and hundreds of booths and software developers and hardware developers that are creating unbelievable products for the Mac and Apple’s other products like the iPod, which you hate too. Rather then trash a company that you do not like, I wanted you to report a little deeper and look at the MacWorld Expo and talk about the innovative and amazing products that are coming out of it.

If you want to buy a $800 Compaq laptop to read email and surf the web (Although you’ll need a lot more software with Windows to block all the virues, spybots, adware and trojans and worms) you can do that.. you can also buy a $800 ibook. If you want a $2500 Thinkpad or a new $4000 Dell XPS M170 laptop (The one my office bought me cost $1800.00 but it was stripped) or a new MacBook for $2500 you can do that too.

The idea is that we didn’t belittle your choice of podcast hardware when much cheaper options were available to you, I feel it’s just not right on your part to belittle a person that wants to spend $2500 on an Apple rather then a PC when cheaper models of both are available.
