Libraries post Patriot Act warnings

Imagine the surprise when Patrons to some California libraries where greeted with the following signs.

“A warning that records of the books they borrow may wind up in the hands of federal agents” they also inform the reader that the USA Patriot Act “prohibits library workers from informing you if federal agents have obtained records about you.”

Needless to say this is raising some eyebrows and pissing patrons off. I know that the US Govt is trying to protect us but I am sure this makes many people a little bit paranoid. The Job that puts food on my families table requires me to be aware that I can be monitored at anytime. But I have known this for 20 years and have no issue with it because that’s the way it is. We as Americans have always enjoyed a level of freedom that in unparalleled in the world. But I am not sure I want the government seeing what I have checked out at the library. [SF Gate]

I think you posted this on the wrong post, however you make a valid point. On the contrary, I feel that everyones personal data should be respected as just that, personal. If I have a HD that I have used for 4 or 5 years and I had Quickbooks or some other type of software loaded on it, your damn right I wanna make sure that noone can read it. Especially if I am selling my computer so that I can upgrade. Illegal information isn’t always the only type of data that someone might want to keep private, remember that. Here is another example, medical records, fanancial information, stock brokerages, credit card companies, lawyers offices, blah blah blah. All of these companies data is very sensitive, not to mention a liability. I agree with your assessment, but believe it to be near sighted.

My opinion won’t stop this data destructor, but someone needs to be able to stop the pedophiles downloading kids having sex with adults. That’s how they snag them is recovering the data from their hd. Only criminals should be worried about destroying their data. So if you’re not hacking into the Pentagon or sending instructions to the troops in Iraq… Loading new data onto an old file makes it very hard to do a snapshot of the hd anyway.
