MyCast at PodcasterNews.com

I have had some people asking me about MyCast at PodcasterNews.com and wanted to explain how it works. When we were planning the site last year we wanted to make it easier for those visiting the site to build a playlist of podcast from the network That playlist would result in a custom RSS feed which would have every show that the person has subscribed to. What was also important was that those listeners, that where not using a podcatcher could also use MyCast. So what we did was tie the Flash player to the RSS feed, thus not only can listeners that are downloading the shows get just what they wanted, those visiting the site with their web browser could play the shows from their computer.

Our goal has been to build a listener experience and we were the first to focus on this. In the coming weeks we will be rolling out some new sites that will help listeners find other great podcast in some new offerings that are solely focused on the listener experience and helping them find influential podcast.

Additionally other companies will be rolling out sites powered by our podcast delivery engine, companies and organizations wanting a turnkey podcasting solution should contact us at marketing@rawvoice.com

To many sites have only focused on the Podcaster experience and not the listener. Some other sites are starting to copy what we have created with MyCast which is the best form of flattery.

Publicity Promotion for Podcaster News Network

From the RawVoice.com website see disclaimer below. We are working hard to get the word out to the masses on the Podcaster News Network and thought we would introduce a publicity promotion. From now till the middle of February we will be watching what listeners and podcasters have to say about PCN via their blog entries. We will take the top five submitted entries and give them some free air time across our family of shows.

So if you like what we are doing at PCN, or you love a specific show or category of the network and you write a web post on it let us know, it could turn into some great publicity for your own site. Drop us a email at feedback “at” podcasternews.com with the URL to the post, and we will add you to the list of sites that we will vote on. If you are a podcaster, and talk about us on your show be sure to send us episode and time hack.

Podcast Sandbox’s

The land rush to continue to hack away vertical markets in podcasting continues. With some proclaiming their space to be the official this, or the official that. I suppose the creator of a site can call it whatever they want, as there is no Olympic committee deciding which company can use “official podcast site for (place subject here) in their site description.

The other day I saw someone announce a wiki that was the new official podcast wiki (where was the old one). It’s all fun to watch, and to be expected thats for sure. Personally the history is in my head so I don’t need a Wiki explaining it to me.

I think though this kind of activity is a sign that people are scared that they are going to miss the gravy train. But I think what it really indicates, is that some people are desperate to become a default landing page for some specific nitch within podcasting. Lot’s of people are focusing on helping podcasters very few are focusing on helping build awareness and making it easier for the general listener.

I have said for a long time we have to keep it simple for the consumers of the content, that is a tough balance when building a site thats only survives if the content is good. All of my future strategy is about making it easier for consumers of podcasts to be able to find and subscribe to the content they want without diminishing a podcasters brand and content. This community has to make it really simple for the listeners to consume content

One thing for sure Podcasting, Videocasting and the personal media evolution is going to continue to grow at a frenzied pace. I am going to continue to focus on the content and aligning with those that create content, and try to do innovative things. Will my turnip wagon bump against some other turnip wagon? Probably and guess what, it’s called competition and hopefully it will stay friendly.

If you don’t trust the media, do it yourself

Headline borrowed from a News.com article and the associated write up prompted me to write a post on my perspective of media and the relationship and goals of what we are doing over at PodcasterNews.com. To my knowledge what we have built over their and are continuing to add content producers every day is all about citizen media and the evolution in news reporting.

We don’t go on the philosophy that all media cannot be trusted but we do believe that much of the media coverage is driven by agendas of the specific network. The content producers are podcaster news network need only have an opinion and we will do our best to have a balanced offering of commentary.

Will this always be possible, in a sense we are at the mercy of those content creators that want to dedicate time to creating short format shows for the network. I have been focusing some of the recruiting efforts in areas where we need people but needless to say we want to add as many shows as possible on the widest variety of news, politics, business, sports, lifestyles etc that we can.

But getting back to the crux of this headline, I think if we continue to focus on the content and not get hung up on the politics of being a new news organization we will attract the eyes, ears and repeat listeners and subscribers of content on the network. [News.com]

Jason Calacanis and a Podcast Prediction!

Hey Jason got a question for you and it is in reference to this prediction:

12. No podcasting company will have any significant success in 2006, but a number of podcasters will be offered great jobs at Sirius and XM Radio.

How can you say no one will have significant success in 2006, when Podcast Connect has seen huge success this year. I don’t measure success in millions of dollars like you do, but I do measure success in several other ways.

Success is TechPodcasts.com and the reporting Affiliates are reaching 500,000 plus individual listeners each month, with podcasters putting some sponsorship money in their pockets for the past 6 months. Some of the podcasters are paying their house payments with their earnings. I think that is success don’t you!

Success
is the launch of the very first Citizen Media Podcast News Outlet at PodcasterNews.com which in it’s first 30 days has built up to 50 content producers contributing weekly content, by creating short five minute podcasts on news, lifestyle and general interest stories. Don’t even get me started on the mechanics of the engine that runs podcasternews.com, we are now licensing that engine to various organizations nationwide that are rolling out podcasting solutions. Pretty good for a startup that is being built while we all have day jobs!

We have had a great 2005, and I expect 2006 to be that much better and then some. If XM or Sirius want to talk we will be happy to talk to them but guess what are making this evolution happen without them. For that I am making it my personal challenge to insure that prediction #12 is wrong! [Jason Calacanis]
