The hotel I am staying at is a prime example of why companies should have broadband in the business’s I was staying at a Marriott Residence Inn the dial up sucked and I found a non long term stay hotel down the street cheaper and free Broadband. Fridge is smaller but hey I have broadband now. I can even do the WiFi thing while eating breakfast. Small business like restaurants and coffee shops are stupid if they have not deployed broadband. Customers will keep coming back. The proof is in the bean counters analysis [Seattle Times]

Couldn’t agree more. However – getting people to realise it’s there and use it is a problem. In Brisbane, Australia the city council has recently (a few months ago) put in a number of free access WiFi nodes in our main mall (The Australian meaning of the word ‘mall’ is ‘a section of road in the middle of the city that has been paved over as a very large footpath’) complete with a transparent proxy (and some sort of URL filter which I’m not 100% keen on).
A group of co-workers and myself wandered down to test it out a while ago and I tend to take my laptop with me when meeting friends for coffee but I haven’t seen anyone else doing the same thing. This is a shame, if the usage is too low the next round of budget analysis will probably kill the service :(
