GNC #1141 Electric Jet Powered Garbage Trucks

Audio Only Tonight

Mike Dell here filling in for Todd this week. I do the Podcast Help Desk and Mike Dell’s World Podcast. I have a stack of stuff for you in this episode of Geek News Central.

One thing I noticed tonight while getting ready for the show… Sites are wising up to the ad blockers. In fact Forbes.com will not let you look at anything unless you white list them or pay them. Not sure how I feel about that, but I know one thing for sure, I won’t be reading any Forbes articles anytime soon. Some sites are just lousy with ads and make it impossible to read them (Facebook) without an ad blocker.

Outlook for IOS – My First Look

Screen shot 2015-10-29 at 10.18.28 AMOutlook for iOS has been out awhile, but this is my first look.

Since I made the switch from Microsoft products to “other” products in 2008 or so, I haven’t looked back…. Until now.

My wife started a new job and received a Microsoft Surface (Not sure exactly what model) as her work machine.  It came with Windows 8.1 which I wasn’t really impressed with.  When windows 10 came out, I upgraded it for her.  What a world of difference!  I have to say, windows just became usable again.  I have one older laptop that I upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10 and it works great for what little I use it for. I’m not switching back from Apple for my desktop anytime soon, but I am impressed.

That being said, I notice that Microsoft is now putting out new office apps for iOS and Mac.  I decided I would try Outlook for iOS for email.

I use gmail for my main email and my work email.  I also have an icloud email account.  I figured I would give it a full test and put all 3 in it.  It was really easy, no server addresses, no SSL selections, it just worked (when is the last time you said that about a Microsoft Product?).

Outlook for IOS organizes things a lot like Gmail does.  In threads.  You can turn that off if you want.  It also handles “priority inbox” in Gmail in what is called “Focused Inbox”.   All in all, it’s a great email app and I’m 90% sure I’m going to dump Gmail for IOS as my go-to mobile email app.

Outlook also picked up my calendars from both iCloud and Google. The good thing is it didn’t make dupes like some calendar apps do.  I’m thinking if Microsoft keeps making good stuff like this, they may convert some of the die-hard Apple Fanboys.

To check out Outlook for IOS, see it in the Apple App Store

GNC #963 – Guest Host Mike Dell

Todd is still out for one more show, enjoying his Vacation somewhere in the lower 48, I’m Mike Dell, from Podcast Help Desk, former Geek of the North and I will be your host for tonights show. Most of you don’t know me unless you have been around podcasting a long time. I used to do a show called Geek of the North which was a Tech Show. I have since Podfaded that show and I now do a relatively new show called Podcast Help Desk  at podcasthelpdesk.com where I talk about the geeky techie side of podcasting and help people get setup and going with their podcast.

It’s great to be back with the GNC listeners!  I last hosted this show on November 10th 2008 Show #415.   A LOT of water has gone under the bridge since then!

NO VIDEO Today.  I have a Face for Radio :) g

Velodyne Lidar for Driverless Cars (and other things) at CES

HDL_pageheaderTodd and Don interviewed David Oroshnik from Velodyne about their lidar systems.

The lidar system David demonstrated has 32 infrared beams that can see 360 degrees from the spinning sensor and 10 degrees up and 30 degrees down for a 40 degree field of view.  These sensors are used in self-driving cars and mapping applications.

Velodyne Lidar sensors are not available to the public and, as David said, would cost as much as the car does right now. Look for Velodyne Lidar sensors to become part of future consumer products.

For more information see VelodyneLidar.com
