Fulton Innovation Brings Wireless Charging Everywhere

Fulton Innovation was a founding member of the Wireless Power Consortium and were recently at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas to show off their latest, no pun intended, innovations.  They are working to unify a standard for wireless charging of all of your devices from phones to tablets and more.  The standard is called Qi (pronounced “Chi”) and it will bring together all of the makers of your favorite mobile devices and allow them all to charge wirelessly in a standards-based way.  Users will be able to charge a smartphone simply by sitting it on a table, or in many other ways.

Fulton Innovation is looking at a lot more than just phones and tablets though.  They are looking at entering your kitchen with such things as wireless blenders that will charge right on your countertop, induction ranges, even charging your electric car by simply parking it in a particular space.

All of this futuristic sounding technology has been developed and was on display at CES.  Now Fulton Innovation is working with third-party manufacturers to get their technology built and out into the marketplace.  You can visit them online to find out more and you will definitely want to watch the video below.

iLuv Wins With New Travel Gadgets

iLuv LogoiLuv will be familiar to many with their extensive range of matching accessories for tablets, smartphones and MP3 players. At CES this year, iLuv won no less than 5 CES Innovations Honoree awards to add to their collection of accolades. Todd gets a review of their latest products from Peter of iLuv.

The DreamTraveler is combined iPhone dock, USB charger and mains power strip squared aimed at those unfortunate souls who have to spend time in poorly equipped hotel rooms. It has two USB charging ports, three power outlets and an Apple connector for charging iPhones, iPods and iPads.

For the international traveller, iLuv has the RockWall, a dual USB charger that comes with the right mains plugs for different countries round the world.

Finally, the Mo’Beats is a portable tablet or smartphone cradle with Bluetooth wireless speakers that has a built-in lithium-ion battery which will run for about 4 hours.

All the products will be available in April or May. The Mo’Beats SRP is expected to be $89.99 but the website is currently showing $99.99. I think Peter gets his prices mixed up in the video as the RockWall is priced at $49.99 on the website and the DreamTraveler is $129.99.

PowerSkin by XPAL

We have all been there, you are at a conference or out on the town and your phone battery dies at the most inappropriate time. Now you could carry the phones charger with you and run around looking for an outlet, but lets face it that’s not very practical. Besides the fact you start looking like a crazy person. A better solution maybe the PowerSkin by XPAL Power Inc.. XPAL Power Inc is a subsidiary of TennRich International a California based corporation. The design team for the PowerSkin is in Taiwan and it is manufactured in Shenzhen, China.  The factory in China is the first one in that country to focus on lithium rechargeable batteries.   It is also the largest producer of portable power packs in Asia. XPAL is very proud of its high standard of safety in its manufacturing plants and the quality of its products.

PowerSkin is an impact resistant case made of silicon rubber. It is light weight and has a non-slip grip. The case is recyclable, the batteries and internal components are not. It can extend the talk time from 4.5 to 8 hours depending on the phone. The new line of PowerSkin was introduced at CTIA. It is currently available for the: HTC HD7 for $49.99, T-Mobile mytouch for $59.99. and the Samsung Galaxy i900, i903, and 4G for $59.99 at the PowerSkin Web site. The PowerSkin is coming in April for the HTC EVO for $59.99, Samsung Vibrant for $59.99 and the Apple iPhone 4 (both Verizon and AT&T) for $49.99. If you sign up for their mailing list they will send you an email plus a discount coupon code.   If you use your phone a lot at conferences or events, the new line of PowerSkin maybe just what you are looking for.

Green Plug Promises Smart Charging

Graeme from Green Plug stops by to chat with Andy and Tom about Green Plug.  Green Plug is what is commonly referred to as a wall wart, but it’s really a whole lot more than that.  It can provide communication between the charger, power supply, and the unit being charged.  Individual devices can be “programmed” by their manufacturer to work with Green Plug to charge more quickly and efficiently.  This is what Green Plug referred to as a kind of “turbo mode” where you could get an 80% charge in 5 minutes – that’s just an example, not a claim.  This is promising technology if it can deliver as promised and if manufacturers are willing to adopt the technology.

The first products will begin rolling out in the second quarter of 2011.

Fulton eCoupled Does Wireless Power

Dave Baarman presents Fulton eCoupled Wireless Power (ecoupled.com). They have systems for wirelessly powering things such as cell phones and even systems using conductive ink for “smart packaging” that actually lights up the packaging when placed on a special conductive grocery store shelf. You are going to be blown away by where this is headed. Listen to the full interview and post commentary to get some insights into where ecoupled charging and what symbol to look for when you are purchasing electronics.
