As reported here on May 30th, Apple and Intel are about to partner in a relationship which
expects to result in Apple computers running on Intel CPU’s by Mid 2006. According to the WWDC keynote announcement made by Steve Jobs, the last five versions of OSX have been secretly running on a PC to test the possibility. The process will be simple according to Jobs and most software will be able to port it’s Apple compatible programs to run on an Intel based PC with OSX in a few hours.
On my Surf-Bits website I monitored the keynote and listed topics and points that Jobs made in his speech. Some of them include the fact that as of this week, Apple will have shipped 2 million copies of Tiger out. The next Mac OSX will be code-named Leopard. There are already over 400 Dashboard Widgets, and last quarter Apple sold 16 million iPods a market share of 76% among ALL players.
But the announcement leaves me with more questions then answers. Will there be any more G5 PowerMacs or will we see new PowerBooks at all before the Intel release? Will the hardware be left out of the program and will OSX become just another OS for PC’s? What will happen to all the G5’s in stock currently? I wanted to buy a new G5 Tower, but do I want to purchase a dead end hardware line? Over the next few days I hope some of these questions will be answered, I think Apple has a lot to explain to their customers.
