Music on Podcast will the RIAA come a knocking?

The number one question I keep getting from people since the announcement of my book on Podcasting is the issues surrounding playing RIAA controlled music on a Podcast.

My simple response you better have all the licenses or that strong arm 4 letter word group known as the RIAA will come knocking.

I have also been asked about Mashups. Well that one is even more difficult to answer, some are playing them claiming that their is a element of fair use and that they are above the law.

My opinion is this anytime you take a song that falls under BMI, Seasac, RIAA, Ascap and all of those other organizations that want to charge you your first born son to license the music to play legally then you better be prepared if someone comes knocking with a summons.

I hope those organizations do not get stupid on us and start prosecuting people. It could get real ugly out their in podcast land real quick. My best advice is get permission for everything you play from the copyright holder and it’s best if you have it in writing or visit Magnatunes.com and pick out some tracks that you can play on your podcast over their..

Better yet go out and find a band that is doing original music and play some of their jams
