Student’s cellphone confiscated at school

My 14 year old daughter now has a security cell phone. It’s one that I can restrict where and who she can call. It came with very strict parent imposed usage guidelines and does not have text messages. Some of you will roll your eyes 1st for the restrictions I imposed to allowing her have one in the first place.

She is at that age where she has a lot going on in after school activities weekend sporting events and of course hanging out with girl friends etc. Hawaii is relatively a safe place but giving her a way to contact us, the police or the parents of friends gives me a little more assurance that she can contact us when needed.

As more and more kids carry cell phones schools have imposed usage rules. I know my daughters school restricts usage to lunch time and after school. Violation of that rule results in confiscation of the phone with immediate notification of parents.

Well seems a students phone in Pennsylvania had his cell phone confiscated then the school went and read the text messages and called people in the phonebook. Seems the school thought the kid was dealing drugs. I would think that if the school has suspected something they would have brought in the police and the parents first and asked for permission. I know I would have personally consented to the review of calls and text messages but they did it without the consent of the minor. To me this is simply amazing and I wonder how many other students have had their privacy violated. [Engadget]

Wow, that’s crazy that they just read through their txt messages and called people in the phonebook like that. I would be getting some people fired and hiring a lawyer. That’s a pretty bad privacy invasion. If that was me, I would have never given them my cell phone in the first place, they would have to litterally pry it from me.
