Just Say No to These Gadgets

I’ve seen three things this week in various places that make me scratch my head and wonder “why?”

First, there’s the picture watch. One of my coworkers got one for Christmas and she’s proudly showing it to everyone. It’s the size of a Volkswagon and takes up half her arm. It looks ridiculous and the “pictures” are of limited quality and certainly stunted in visual appeal by how small they have to be to fit on the watch. I’m saying no to that one.

Next, there’s the Wrap 920AV television watching sunglasses. New optical technology allows video display on the glasses while not simultaneously obscuring your vision. I wonder if it’s DTV compatible? If texting while walking is dangerous, what is TV-watching while walking? I’m going to pass on this one, too.

Last, how about a video watch, ala Dick Tracy? Yup, LG is debuting one at CES this week that is supposed to allow you to send video mail via a tiny camera built into it, and viewing of incoming video shows up on a one and one-quarter inch screen. Oh, and it’s waterproof, so now you’ll not have to stop communicating with people just because you’re in the shower. Hmmm. PASS.

What “Just Say No” gadgets have you seen lately? I can’t be at CES to see much of this in person, but I’m enjoying the reports coming out of Vegas about some of the new gadgets.

Day 1 From the Noob at CES

Well, as you may know, I took the trip to Las Vegas with Todd and Andy to help with the video of the show. Right now I am uploading some of the Back Channel content. Todd and Andy are at Show Stoppers (I didn’t get an invite), so I am working from the HP CNTR STG suite on the 2nd floor of the Wynn building.

Day 1 of CES was nothing but spectacular. Granted, it’s a little scaled back, but so far I have no complaints. It’s amazing how this event can work so well. I walked through the main CES South Hall floor as they were putting it together on Tuesday. Big stuff for a big city.

One thing I noticed about Vegas – the Stop lights take a LOT longer to change. Holy Carps-bait!

I stopped by Digital Experience last night with the team and recorded tons of content. That is up, now. I’ve also met some names that I have been conversing with throughout my career. Robert Scoble, Joel Evans (formerly from Geek.com), James and Kevin from JKOntheRun and a lot more. I have also met some great people that blog, report and present.

I have no doubt that Day 2 will be just as awesome as the first. Remember to check out all the Back Channel and Primary Channel stuff.

Windows 7. Download If You Dare

Windows 7 will be released in beta to anyone who wants to download it beginning this Friday, January 9th. Despite the fact that the beta will likely be buggy and have a ways to go until it is ready for Prime Time, I’m just betting a bunch of us are going to download it and start playing with it.

I know I am. I have a laptop sitting here with nothing to do. It was very high-end for its time, which means it has pretty good RAM and hard drive space as well as a decent processor, so I’m sure it can take Windows 7, even though it couldn’t take Vista.

Who’s with me? Anyone willing to sacrifice a machine to try out the beta? I mean, what’s the worst that can happen? I still have my original install disks and can go right back to XP on my test machine, no problem. So what’s the risk?

Windows 7 Beta can be downloaded here.

CES 2009 Video Gear Packout for Geek News Central

This is my full gear packout for CES I hope you enjoy the small review I did. Apologize that I have not put up more content to date. Bandwidth has been a major issue as always. The Monte Carlo hotel is throttling the bandwidth which is horrible considering we are paying big bucks for Internet Service.
