D-Link Cloud Cameras and Routers at CES

D-Link LogoD-Link announced at CES today a range of IP cameras and routers with cloud connectivity for remote monitoring and viewing.

The two new cameras are the Cloud Camera 1050 (DCS-931L) and Cloud Camera 1150 (DCS-933L) which come with remote monitoring as standard via mydlink and mobile devices, but also offer new capabilities such as audio detection with image alerts based on sound, not just motion, and an integrated wireless repeater mode for expanded coverage that eliminates wi-fi dead zones and lets consumers easily add more Cloud Cameras without worrying about existing wireless coverage. That’s a pretty clever idea, building a repeater into the camera. Of course, these are 802.11ac devices and the 1150 also offers infra-red illumination for night operation.

To go with the IP cameras, D-Link’s new 11ac routers are the wireless AC1750 Dual-Band Gigabit Cloud Router and Wireless AC1200 Dual-Band Gigabit Cloud Router (aka DIR-860L and DIR-868L) which deliver speeds of up to 1750 Mb/s and 1200 Mb/s respectively by combining both 11ac and 11n technologies. In addition, both Cloud Routers offer easy remote network management with the free mydlink Lite app from an iPhone, iPad or Android device, which is interesting and could be useful in a number of environments.

The cameras and routers will be available in the next few months – The Cloud Cameras 1050 and 1150 will be available in February for $79.99 and $99.99 respectively. The dual-band gigabit Cloud Routers DIR-860L and DIR-868L will be later in April for $149.99 and $169.99.

D-Link LogoAt CES today, D-Link will announce a phenomenal wireless gaming router that will support data transfer speeds in excess of 1 Gb/s by combining 11ac and 11n technologies in a single router.

DGL-5500 D-Link Gaming RouterThe D-Link Gaming Router (DGL-5500) uses Qualcomm’s StreamBoost technology offering Gigabit wireless speeds for fast gaming and HD video streaming to multiple devices. The phenomenal wireless speeds of up to 1.3 Gb/s are achieved by aggregating both 11ac and 11n wireless technologies. Using both, 11ac can deliver up to 867 Mb/s and 11n, 450 Mb/s, which when taken together gives the 1.3 Gb/s. In addition to wireless connectivity, the router has four wired Gigabit ports. Obviously the receiving devices will need to support the same standards and there will be data overheads but it’s still amazingly fast.

And it looks pretty cool too.

D-Link Releases 802.11ac Dual Band Wireless Adapter

Easy WPS Push Button SetupWhile all laptops these days have built-in wireless connectivity, it is still not included in every device on the market.  For those unconnected pieces of hardware there is still the trusty USB stick wireless adapter, and D-Link has pushed the envelope a bit for those devices by releasing a new 802.11ac dual-band adapter.

The AC1200 comes with a host of new features that will hopefully improve your connectivity.  In fact, the company refers to this as “next generation” technology, but benchmark tests are still needed to bear that statement out.

D-Link Cloud Storage 2000

D-Link Cloud Storage 2000 is the newest addition to D-Links’ line of cloud storage options. It offers remote sharing, streaming and management capabilities. You can download, upload and delete files and folders either remotely or locally. It will allow you to access files stored on the ShareCenter from any computer via the mydlink.com portal. At this time this does require that you have Java 6 installed if you are using Chrome on a Mac. You can also access the same files via the free app for iPhone, iPad and Android devices. With the free app you can view photos and stream music and videos from the ShareCenter directly to your mobile devices from anywhere. The D-link Cloud Storage 2000 also has a DLNA capable server which streams music, photo and video to compatible media players including the Boxee Box and PlayStation(r). It has a Photo Center which allows the administrator to create photo albums and view them with a side show. It also has a built in web file server and secure FTP server. With the USB port you can add an USB Drive or printer. It supports, local backup, Apple Time Machine backup, Amazon S3 backup, and PC backup among others. You can schedule it to power off at a certain time and it will automatically notify by email of the Device Status.

The Cloud Storage 2000 replaces D-Links DNS–320 storage device with a faster CPU and a gigabit Ethernet port for high speed data transfers. It can support up to two 3.5 inch SATA hard drives. It supports multiple users streams simultaneously. It is easy to install and is equipped with Raid 1 technology for security. D-Link Shipping 1,750Mbps Router

If you follow tech news then you may have already heard that there is a new WiFi standard coming.   Today, router maker D-Link began shipping their first product using the 802.11ac standard.  The company claims a staggering 1,750Mbps speed for The Cloud Router 5700 (DIR-865L).

According to reports, the router is “capable of reaching speeds of up to 1,750Mbps speeds when operating in this dual mode, which is made up of 1,300Mbps wireless-AC and 450Mbps wireless-N speeds.”  The router also contains a cloud app that makes it accessible from anywhere in the world.  In addition, there is also an app that allows users to connect a mobile device to the USB port and share data across it.  Finally, there are also four 10/100/1000 ethernet ports for gigabit wired connections.

The new router carries an MSRP of $190 U.S. and is available from various online retailers such as Amazon.  Of course, the router is backwards compatible for all of your current devices.

D-Link Unveils New Home Networking Products and Services

D-Link, who make one of the most popular home routers on the market, have announced a new line of products that integrate their routers and with their new cloud services.  The list of new products includes a cloud-enabled WiFi router, a camera, an HD media router, and an all-in-one mobile companion.

The new D-Link DIR-605l is available now for a retail price of $39.99.  This isn’t just a standard WiFi router, but also comes with mydlink capabilities which allow users to share files remotely and also use the available iOS and Android apps to manage your home network from anywhere.

The new HD Media Router 3000 comes with “speeds of up to 900 Mbps, HD Fuel® for automatic bandwidth prioritization and new SharePort Cloud to remotely manage and share content, the D-Link® HD Media Router 3000 provides high-performance connectivity to support a range of bandwidth intensive applications. Delivering industry-exclusive 500Mbps PowerLine bandwidth, the D-Link Wireless N PowerLine Gigabit Router taps into a home’s existing electrical wiring to extend wired and Wi-Fi networking to hard-to-reach places for enhanced gaming, HD media streaming and super-fast Internet. ”  It will be available in late January for an MSRP of $169.99.

Today June 8th is IPV6 Day, I know that most people are thinking that’s nice, what is IPV6 and why should I care. The reason you should care is that IPV4 which is the current protocol we are using is running out of IP addresses. When the Internet was first conceived the idea that we would need more than the 4.3 billion IP address that is available under IPV4 seemed ridiculous. However now that everything from our computer to TVs have their own IP address there are more than 4 billion IPV4 addresses in use. In fact ICANN which allocates these numbers issued the last blocks in February of this year to the five Regional Internet Registries (RIRs). IPV6 is the protocol that is replacing IPV4. While IPV4 is based on 32 bits of information, IPV6 is based on 128 bits, which means the number of address available will be 3.4 X10 to the 38th power.

 

For the near future IPV4 and IPv6 will coexist and as new devices come online they will be IPV6 capable and IPV4 will be faded out. Actually Windows 7, Mac OS X, and Linux all support IPv6 as does iOS 4.1+, Windows Mobile and Android 2.2 (and above). Most consumers will not notice a difference, other than they may be provided a new router by their ISP. The biggest problem will be with businesses that depend on the internet for their daily business. They need to make sure they can communicate with both IPv6 and IPv4 devices. If they can only communicate with IPv4 then they may have problems reaching their customers using IPv6 devices. So it is important for businesses to make sure their networks are IPv6 ready as quickly as they can. The other advantages that IPv6 has over IPv4 are:

There are some questions on how much of an emergency it is to go to IPv6, there are some who think that the rush to IPv6 is unnecessary, while others think it’s happening to slowly. Whether you think going to IPv6 is necessary or not, really doesn’t matter it is happening and you need to make sure your business is ready.
