The Register has a pretty god article on Microsoft’s Virtual Earth especially about the part were the head quarters of Apple computer is nothing but a bare field. Either some programmers are having a lot of fun or the imagery that they are using is old. Either way good joke if someone is doing some monkey business or not so good if the data they are using is that old. [The Register]
Update: I looked at the map from were I grew up as a child and I know for a fact of some new development in the area next to my family home that has been their for up to 5 years and the sat image of the area is at least 5+ years old.
Scoble told me that the images are from 1991. What do you want from Microsoft, there looking to push out anything they can to compete with Google and Yahoo and Apple.
I have a friend in the panhandle of Texas and he looked up his house using both Google and Virtual Earth.
Both sites showed an empty field where his house and about five others are currently either built or are under development. His house has been their for about four years.
So maybe they both use the same mapping/map imageing service. I would be interested to know what service they use.
Seems if they are going to provide this cutting edge service they could get current map imges. Then again, maybe it’s like GpS…it can only be so accurate.
