RIFT’s Carnival of the Ascended has Begun!

RIFT turns 7 this year. Players can celebrate with the Carnival of the Ascended which began on March 15, 2018, and will run through April 5, 2018.

Seven years has flown by in the blink of an eye – let’s mark the occasion with all of our traditional Carnival events in Tempest Bay. We welcome all Live server players to grab a piece of 7 Year birthday cake and join the celebrations! Wait up, say Prime server players … Tempest Bay? We haven’t found Tempest Bay Yet! Ahh, very true, though you’ve clearly heard rumors of the fun going on there, like echos from a past life. Likewise, a traveling merchant has heard of this new, far off land called Vigil and is even now packing up his mule train to bring you a taste of Carnival! Look for Winachuck Maguck in Sanctum and Meridian. Yes, he has mastered the arcane art of being in two places at once!

New Carnival items available for event currency include:

  • A carousel-style Pegasus companion pet named Celeste
  • Newly designed carnival-style masks
  • Players who are “feeling bubbly” can apply the new Celebratory or Prismatic weapon rune
  • Players who want to throw around some virtual coin can use the Golden or Silver rune of Wealth
  • The Primal Rebirthday Cake has unlimited shelf life
  • Earn a new Raid Tier 2 Earring for level 70’s (RIFT live, only)
  • New 7th Anniversary Cape

Available on the RIFT store for credits:

  • New Wings of the Archfey – “make your own Carnival parade while wearing these beauties”
  • New Mount – Greeñata – a unique floating mount form

RIFT Introduces RIFT Prime

RIFT announced that they will be launching RIFT Prime this year. The decision appears to be based on feedback from users who did not like the current way RIFT was monetizing the game.

In the Spring of 2018, we will launch a new server, RIFT Prime. We’ve paid a lot of attention in discussions with all of you and within the broader gaming community regarding business models in the MMO and games industry as a whole.

We have the opportunity to experiment with this fresh RIFT server using an oft-requested subscription model and progressively unlocked content. Our goal for RIFT Prime is to provide the experience that many of you have requested: no lockboxes, a significantly reduced store with more of the current store-based items obtained through gameplay (or removed entirely) – plus the excitement of sequential progression through RIFT’s content with monthly milestones and achievements.

In the same blog post, it says that they on the RIFT Prime sever, they plan to present RIFT at its roots as much as possible. The Prime server will progress at a faster pace than the original launch, and will eventually “come to an end in spectacular fashion”.

Other details that have been revealed about RIFT Prime:

  • Dynamically matching characters to their current zone’s level
  • Dungeons dropping loot specific to your character’s true level
  • Caps on the number of professions available to a single character’s
  • Participation awards that carry over to your characters on existing servers

RIFT is Going Free-To-Play

RIFTTrion Worlds has announced that RIFT is going free-to-play as of June 12, 2013. This means that everyone who wants to play RIFT can download it, log in, and play all of the entire game without having to spend any money to do it. The free-to-play day coincides with the arrival of Update 2.3: Empyreal Assault.

Brand new players will have access to all of the content within the game (without having to put up with level restrictions). New players will start with 2 character slots and 3 bag slots. Veteran players (which means everyone who has purchased RIFT or Storm Legion) will keep everything that they have earned. In other words, this isn’t going to involve a “reset” that wipes out your progress.

Gamers who have been holding off on playing RIFT because they couldn’t afford a subscription will soon be able to start playing it for free. However, if you buy the game before June 12, you will get extra character slots, extra bag slots, and expansion souls.

There is going to be new stuff in the RIFT store, but according to the announcement, RIFT is not going to be a “pay-to-win” kind of game. The in-store items will be cool, but the best stuff will only be available to players who earn it in-game.

The subscription system is getting a new name. Subscribers will be known as “Patrons”. Those that subscribe and spend money on RIFT will get extra currency, bonus experience, bonus tokens, and much more. The main point is that you won’t have to spend money to play RIFT, (which makes it easier for your friends to check out the game and play with you).

Why are they going free-to-play? It seems that this is what players have been asking for.
