Cyclus – A Personal Electricity Generator

Satoshi Yanagisawa is a sustainable designer based in Farnham in the south-east of England.  He's developed "Cyclus", a concept for a wind-up USB charger that will give around 30 minutes juice for a couple of twists.  Based on a spring and DC motor, this is simple technology in a great design and is a far more elegant solution than other

Remembering the “good” old days of Mobile Tech

It hasn’t been all that long ago (maybe 15 years?) that when you were not at home or in the office, you were out of contact with the world . At least as far as practical communications go. You turn on the answering machine (if you had one), leave the house to go to work and you had your whole

If you want to get away from it all, then this hotel (motel) room in the Grand Canyon Caverns might be just for you.  Over 200 ft down in a vast underground cavern, you'll be pretty much guaranteed to get an undisturbed night's sleep, even if the bomb goes off.  New for 2010 and situated in a cave 200 ft wide, 400

Designed by Tham & Videgård Arkitekter, the

Geek Pen (for Luddites)

If you're a geek and you haven't yet scored a tablet, you might still need an implement for cursive writing (listen to GNC#603).  If that's the case, then check out the Circuit Board Pen available on Etsy. The polished circuit board body will certainly mark you out as a geek even if you don't have an iPad.  Cost is $45

Calling With Style

This week's unofficial style and design award goes to Native Union and their beautiful Moshi Moshi range of handsets for mobile phones, USB VoIP and Bluetooth. There's four in the range, the first three created by designer David Turpin and the last by Michael Young.   They're a stylish mix of retro and modern and I think they're reasonably priced for a well-designed
