The FCC may finally get it!

The news coming out of the FCC today if implemented in principle will change the world of wireless in a very significant way. The upcoming spectrum auction of the frequency vacated by TV Stations is a once in a lifetime opportunity to have a truly open Wireless spectrum.

FCC Commission Chair Kevin Martin says “Whoever wins this spectrum has to provide … truly open broadband network – one that will open the door to a lot of innovative services for consumers,”

This would be a huge win for consumers but like any forward statements like this we will have to wait and see what really happens. My bet is that the current mobile carriers are going to fight like cats and dogs and lobby very hard to stop this proposal.

This is not in their best interest as it raises the walled garden that they have built for themselves. The rest of the world has far surpassed the wireless network capabilities of what we have in the United States. Japan is so far ahead the United States may never catch up.

The only thing we can hope for is that this proposal goes through as indicated. Yahoo
