I have been sitting here today reading the torrent of mail in the podcaster mailing list, and reading commentary on weblogs across the planet and have realized a couple of things.
Apple does not understand RSS, and because they did not reach out to the community their are going to be a lot of non technical podcasters scratching their heads trying to figure out how to implement all of the crap, that Apple has forced upon us! Why because they did not reach out, and only talked to a few people in the podcasting space.
They blew it in their RSS implementation. I am pretty RSS savvy, and it took me about 60 minutes to make sure everything was square, and made sure my feed validated in just the first top level implementation.
I knew this was going to happen, and nearly begged Apple to talk to the community, but no they just talked to a single podcaster Technical People who know RSS needed to be in on the discussion but no, you went and did it on your own.
Don’t get me wrong I am glad Apple joined the podcast party but wish they would have utilized some of the existing RSS elements instead of having us adopt a half dozen of their own.
Here is what else they are doing, that is wrong!
– changing the title according to the RSS title of the entry
– changing the download directory to something from the feed title instead of the album tag
– changing the filename to something mingled from that
Your screwing with something you should not and have no consideration for the implications. I have my show name setup in a way that allows people to be able to read them logically in the iPod, (didn’t you read my book) your changing my file name. Shame on you! You are changing my Title without my permission STOP NOW!
I wonder how they would deal with a C&D order for copyright infringement. They’re modifing your content without your permission, and passing it off as origional content.
You know apple, they try to keep everything a secret… and…. try to make themselves look better then sliced bread…. hopefully they learn before apple goes
