Who Made Your Blank Discs?

You may think that you know what manufacturer made you blank CD or DVD discs, it was  Fujifilm, TDK Electronics, Ritek, Verbatim, Imation, Hewlett-Packard or another recognizable brand. You would be wrong.  In fact, most of this blank media is manufactured by a short list of companies: India's Moser Baer, Japan's Ricoh and Taiyo Yuden, and Taiwan's CMC Magnetics, Prodisc Technology and Optodisc Technology. The major name brands that actually create their own CD’s are Sony and Philips.

I love checking the RSS feed from the NewScientist.com everyday. They have some great articles and they know how to dumb-down the articles so even I can understand them. Today they have a truly intriguing article on 13 things that do not make sense in the field of science. I can remember many of the incidents but I did not

Good Chip/Bad Chip

Making computer chips is not as easy as it sounds. Manufacturers throw out 20–50% of the chips they make because of defects. According to a USC professor, Melvin Breuer, many of these defects are so minor that the chips could still be used in video cards and audio applications without a problem. He feels that if the manufacturers could identify these chips, they could resell them and drive the cost of electronic devices down to an amount in the billions of dollars each year of savings.

Manipulating Search Engines

Wired has a great article online about Greg Boser who gets paid to make your website rank higher in the search engine results. We all know that it’s not as easy to change rankings as it was 10 years ago, but it still can be done. He get’s most of his clients through speaking engagements and gets paid on the results he gets. As he says in the article, “We make lot more money doing this.” here is some of the comments about search engines and manipulating them he had to say…

Saturn’s Moon Has a Water Based Atmosphere

According to The New Scientist, Saturn’s white moon, Enceladus is surrounded by a thin, watery atmosphere. The moon is so tiny that it would not hold an atmosphere, so scientists think that the atmosphere is being created by more violent means such as volcanos or geysers.

GoogleX Disappears a Day After It’s Debut

Google paid homage to Apple’s OSX operating system by starting a separate page called GoogleX which had icons like those on OSX which would expand as your mouse went over them. It also had a little rhyme at the bottom of the page that said, “Roses are Red, Violets are Blue, OSX rocks, Homage to you.” But the next day GoogleX was gone. Why? Speculation abounds. With all the hoopla around the web about this, maybe Google will come clean. Here’s a peek at it thanks to News.com.
