50 Gig Optical Disk

For a very long time we where stuck with inexpensive CDR/CDRW and the leap to media that would handle large quantities of backup capacity was out of reach for many consumers. With the advent of cheaper DVDR consumers are still behind the power curve when it comes to finding inexpensive backup capacity. My solution has been to buy additional hard-drives and use those for backup medium.

So to my surprise I see that PIoneer is working on technology that would allow up to 50 gigs to be written to a optical disk. Does this technology have what it takes to move us into the era of once again bringing to market technology that consumers may be able to afford to facilitate a decent backup strategy. If they can manage to price this possible product reasonably, I will be one of the many to buy this product first. 50GB, there is no such thing as too much space.
