Olloclip Pivot Grips Smartphones at CES

Olloclip is well-known for its clip-on lens system for the Apple iPhone, though new at CES is the Olloclip Pivot, a grip for smartphones, cameras and GoPros. Todd finds out more from Patrick.

The Olloclip Pivot grip is a bit different from an ordinary handheld smartphone holder as it incorporates an articulating hub which provides 225° of rotation so that the camera can be positioned conveniently to capture the best shot, whether skating, boarding or simply at the beach. The Pivot is water resistant so can be taken swimming or snorkelling.

The Pivot holds smartphones between 4″ and 5.5″ wide, and also takes a GoPro. There’s an integrated cold shoe mount too for lightweight accessories like a light or microphone.  Priced at US$49.99, the Pivot is available now. I want one!

In addition to the Pivot, Olloclip have a new set of lenses for the iPhone 7, including wide angle, fish eye and macro. The core lens set is US$100.

Olloclip Studio is an iPhone Photographer’s Dream Come True

Olloclip LogoWith its high-quality cameras and extensibility thru apps, the iPhone ushered in a whole new era of photography. It was obvious early on that the iPhone would be used for more than just taking snapshots, and a wide range of accessories have been developed to complement this. One thing that’s been tricky, however, is dealing with all of these different lenses, mounts, and other accessories so they work together and take up a minimal amount of space. Popular iPhone accessories manufacturer Olloclip has come up with its own clever solution, the Olloclip Studio.

Daniel met with Tim at the Olloclip booth. Tim demonstrated the many different functions of the new Olloclip Studio. This product is a standalone iPhone case that works with different clips and attachments to turn an iPhone into a true photography studio. Olloclip Studio is compatible with all of Olloclip’s lenses. Studio also allows for cold shoe attachments in either landscape or portrait mode. There’s even an included “kickstand” that makes it easy to view the phone from a seated position. Olloclip Studio is on sale now for $89.99.

Olloclip Adds Lenses to Your Smartphone

Olloclip LogoTaking photos with your smartphone is quick and easy. Unfortunately, there are limitations to what the lens of a smartphone can do all by itself. The Olloclip was designed to improve the photos that you take with your smartphone.

Daniel visited the Olloclip booth at CES 2016 to find out about what Olloclip can offer photographers. They have a range of photographic lenses and accessories for mobile phones. Most of their lenses are for iPhone, and some are also available for Android phones. These lenses are great for people who are traveling, for photo journalists, for media, and also for people who love taking photos.

The Olloclip Active Lens is composed of two different lenses. The Ultra-Wide lens expands the photographer’s field of view. It works on the front facing camera and the back facing camera. The Ultra-Wide lens is great for taking group selfies – because you can fit in a lot more people than you could with a typical smartphone lens.

The same device includes a Telephoto lens. It is a 2x telephoto lens. Line it up with the lens on your smartphone and it will sit snugly. This lens is great for taking photos that require a wider or closer view than what a smartphone lens can do. It is easy to switch between the two lenses as needed.

The OlloClip Active Lens is priced at $99.99 and is available through the OlloClip website.

Olloclip 4-in-1 Lens for Samsung Galaxy Review

Olloclip LogoFor the “point’n’shoot” photographer, smartphones and their built-in cameras have almost completely replaced the compact camera which has seen a huge drop in sales over the past few years. Despite the handiness of the smartphone camera and the myriad of post-processing effects beloved by Instagram, there are times where the problem is getting the right image in the first place. Smartphones with macro or wide-angle lenses aren’t common.

This is where Olloclip saw a gap in the market and via a Kickstarter campaign back in 2011, developed a selection of clip-on lenses for the iPhone and iPad, including macro, fisheye and wide-angle lenses. These have become fairly well-known and I’ve even seen a few people using Olloclips on their iPhone in real life. Not content with Apple owners having all the fun, Olloclip have launched a version of the 4-in-1 lens for the Samsung Galaxy S4 and S5. Let’s take a look.

The 4-in-1 lens system for the Galaxy S4 consists of a mounting bracket that holds two macro lenses and two additional feature lenses that screw in on top of the macro lenses. One of the lenses is a fisheye and the other wide-angle. The bracket is well-made, with metal inserts to hold the screw-in lenses and the lenses are glass; by using different threads on the bracket, it’s not possible screw in the wrong lens. The bracket can be attached from the left or the right to get the correct lens in front of the phones camera. Take a look at the pictures of the Olloclip below to see how it all works.

Samsung with Olloclip

In use, the Olloclip is straightforward – clip on the bracket with the lens you want to use in front of the camera and then start taking pictures using your favourite camera app. Simples!

To test out the Olloclip 4-in-1, I used a Samsung Galaxy S4 borrowed from a colleague and got snapping. Here are a few macro pictures that I took of a coin and the detail is impressive.

And here are a few photos of a local landmark using the normal S4 camera, the wide-angle lens and the fisheye lens. I’m no Ansel Adams, that’s for sure.

Olloclip Fisheye

I was impressed with the Olloclip and with more interesting subject matter, I could have a lot of fun. I particularly liked the macro capabilities and the fisheye was fun too; I was quite surprised at the width of the field of view. Overall, the 4-in-1 was easy to use, clipping on and off in seconds, and significantly increased the photographic possibilities of the Galaxy S4. . On the downside, you do have to remember to bring the Olloclip with you, and the on/off and volume buttons are obstructed by the bracket when in use. The other problem can be with Samsung cases, which often replace the smartphone’s back. If you have one of these cases, you’ll find that the Olloclip won’t clip on and you’ll need to revert to the original case.

The Olloclip 4-in-1 for the Samsung Galaxy S4 or S5 is available direct from the website or through other on-line retailers. Priced at a penny under US$70 or GB£60, it’s more than an impulse purchase but if you are photographer or want to get more from your camera, it’s worth forking out for. Hopefully enough Galaxy owners will purchase to persuade Olloclip to look at other popular Android smartphones as well.

Thanks to Olloclip for the review 4-in-1 lens and to Jacinta for the loan of the Galaxy S4.

Olloclip

Olloclip The Olloclip is a three way lens that you clip to the corner of the iPhone or iPod Touch and it goes over the lens of the phone. It works with the iPhone 4/4S, the iPhone 5 and the iPod Touch 4, 4s and the 5th generation iPod Touch. The lens can work as a fish eye, a macro lens or a wide-angle lens. The macro has 10x magnification, the wide-angle doubles your field of view and the fish eye gives you a 180 field of view. It comes in a pouch.

They are going to release a case that works with the Olloclip in March. Currently most people who have a Olloclip either use it without a case or an easily removable case. The new case has a tripod mount in both landscape and portrait mode. It also has an option for cold shoe mount for a light or microphone, It will work with a regular shoe mount. The Olloclip works with any photo application including Instagram, Flicker and Camera+. The Olloclip is available for $70.00, the website, at Best Buy, Amazon and other retail stores.
