Well, not exactly. In fact, not even close. Much discussion circles around audio-to-text conversion, especially in the disability services community. Bill Gates even believes (and has believed for more than 10 years) that we are on the very cusp of making audio into text a reality for everyone. That could mean no more typing! Unfortunately, the technology really isn’t there
IBM sold its personal computing division to Chinese manufacturer Lenovo (previously called Legend) in 2005, divesting itself of a product line they could not make a profit from. After this weeks announcement that the IBM brand will be dropped, the brand that arguably launched the whole PC more will be consigned to history.
Declan McCullagh from CNet has dug up an interesting FCC filing from a DC freelance writer. Gail Mortenson has requested the FCC to mandate e-mail portability, meaning that if you switched email provider they would be forced to forward any emails to your new email address. As if email doesn’t sometimes already have trouble getting through clogged relays and spam filters, just imagine if your email was coming through a number of forwarding services, all of them under the control of companies you had told where to shove their email.
With both of the boards approving it, and now with no opposition from US regulators, the Acer acquisition of Gateway will go ahead. In my opinion this is a huge deal for the corporate PC market. Acer has some significant competitive advantages. It’s Taiwan base puts its very close to the major component manufacturers, in fact it is itself a huge producer of components to the other PC vendors through both its OEM business and it’s Benq brand.

I played with the Yahoo Audio Search, and was easily able to find audio phrases that are inherent to my podcast. Now all I need is a interface from Yahoo that allows you to search only my shows. So cool! [Yahoo]
