Conversation with Libsyn

Anyone that knows anything about Bandwidth cost know that at this point in the game Libsyn has the best deal in town on podcast delivery, the majority of podcasters use their service for good reason, but with that popularity has come blockbuster growth. They have built a distributed distribution system that is delivering thousands of downloads every minute. To do that perfectly all the time is a challenge I cannot even comprehend.

The service has been pretty remarkable to this point, they survived the iTunes podcast launch last year when others were crushed, they have delivered thousands upon thousands of my show files with no complaint. Yet this month they had two separate incidents that caused me some concern.

I expressed concern over the issue Tuesday, Today I had a conversation with a couple of the folks at Libsyn. They told me in detail what happened and what they are doing to make sure it does not happen again. They have responded and I am very pleased with the actions that they are taking.

In conclusion I want to say first and foremost my show will continue to be delivered on their service. Not many companies would call and apologize and then tell you explicit details on what happened. That in my mind is a community growing together.

File delivery error for a number of listeners!

I woke up this morning with people sending me e-mail, some of them pretty upset in the fact that they did not get the Geek News Central Podcast in there download last night, some got a informercial, some got a video podcast. What’s sad is some other show listener probably got the Geek News Central Podcast instead of a Video or some infomercial that they were supposed to get.

I can assure you this was not on purpose, our Audio hosting company for the second time in a month had a issue as reported by me in the prior post. They put up an apology on their support site today, I know that does little to console the concerns you have, as well as the distress it puts on me but I can assure you we did not send you someone elses show or some ridiculous infomercial. MovableType Enclosure Plugin causing Libsyn Trouble

It seems the MovableType Plugin that takes care of the enclosure portion of the RSS feed is causing the folks over at Libsyn some headaches. What has been happening apparently is that every time the RSS feed gets re-built the plugin reaches out and does a head request on the file. In my case my Podcast feed has the last 15 entries which will cause the plugin to do 15 head request of the file.

I am sure the folks at Libsyn are going to be talking to Brandon, but don’t you think it is about time that Six Apart implement enclosures as a core portion of the blog application. There has to be a better way to parse that info instead of doing it every single time.

This is causing a lot of unnecessary traffic as well, not to mention the undue loading on the servers at Libsyn.
