GNC-2012-05-04 #762 Google Punishment Requires Change!

Sadly after 762 episodes the way I do my show notes has to change. As near as we can figure it, with recent changes to the Google search results, it appear Google is punishing my site due to the way I put show notes in the shows blog post. After all it’s just a computer indexing a page, and the computer has no way of understanding that the reason for the high number of links is due to the corresponding audio and video coverage. I have seen enough of a reduction of traffic that it concerns me to make a major change. I have a plan ahead, and will be implementing the changes as fast as I can get it implemented. For the next couple of shows though their will be no detailed show notes, until I have the new system in place.

There seems to be no other reasonable explanation for Google’s actions, as all of the content on GNC is original content with legitimate outbound links and we have no warnings in the Google Webmaster site. The format of the show notes was such that the links had little context, with link after link stacked on top of one another. We think Google flagged those posts as adding little value and penalized us for it. I know that 10’s of thousands of you come to this page and follow the links along in the show. After 7+ years of doing the show notes the same way it really pains me to have to do this.

The podcast is only a portion of this sites overall traffic and our traffic has been growing steadily over the past few years to force me to make the change.
