Hawaii Earthquake a 6.6 with Sprint Ev-Do to the rescue!

This morning at a little after 7am having been woken up by my 2 year old only moments before I heard a rumbling in the distance followed by the shaking of an earthquake. I jumped up and screamed at the kids to get out of bed and follow me.

Little did I know that a 6.6 earthquake was in progress about a 150 miles from here. The shaking here in Honolulu was enough to wake people up, but I don’t think there was much damage locally. Different story on the Big Island.

A short time later there was a second one that was a 5.8 after the second earthquake the power went out.

This afternoon after things had settled down I decided to see if my I could connect to the Net with my Sprint Ev-Do card and my laptop. I was expecting a single important e-mail, and wanted to check on that. I was able to connect and scan my webmail. The connection was a bit slow, I was not surprised by that as the whole island was without power and I am sure the cell towers were slammed and operating at lower capacity.

Within 5 minutes I had responded to the e-mail I was expecting and went off line so as not to tie things up to long. All told my neighborhood was without power for about 12 hours. Much of the island is still without power even now.

It was cool to be on-line even for a short time even in the middle of a local emergency.
