I think it is great that colleges are giving up on old school land lines in favor of students having a school provided mobile phone. What I am not so excited about, is that some colleges are actually giving the college students phones to track their whereabouts so that they can be found in a emergency.
As a parent, I would want to see the fine print on those agreements. Most students entering college are adults, and by law they are now responsible for their own actions yet these school are claiming they are doing this for safety reasons. I can see both sides of the fence on this one, but isn’t college generally a place that allows these young adults to test their maturity level and decision making process while at the same time hoping they get a education.
If my parents had told me at 18 that in order to go to college, the school was going to force me to carry a mobile that tracked me, I think I would have chose another school. Very curious to say the least. [Wired]
