I explained in my last post that we had to rebuild servers over the weekend, this was due to a security exploit in the VoteCasterPro Comdevweb application. One thing that upsets me about this is I subscribe to a lot of security mailing list and I also do not install applications in their default locations. A message to the company essentially resulted in a note from them saying they sent a e-mail to every customer in their database.
They obviously did not reach me. If I were that company I would have sent a letter called customers what ever it took to make sure the word got out. This is a small application that can fall off the radar. Another thing I learned in this ordeal is that I will never ever again use Plesk it is horrible! Some good lessons learned. Needless to say it is nice to be on a dedicated server that has a lot more flexibility and power under the hood.
Yeah, I’ve used Plesk before. Then I moved to another provider using WHM/CPanel, and have never looked back. Plesk just seems much more limited than CPanel. Anyway, now I have my own WHM/CPanel VPS and I love it. Sure, I have the option of Plesk, but bleh! Why have hamburger, when you can have a T-bone or Porterhouse?
My $0.02USD…
