NASA better safe than sorry

I just can not get over the fact that we have flown as many Shuttle flights as we have, and only 1 flight after the Columbia disaster they want to go down their and pull out some spacers. This just blows me away. The question I want answered is how many previous shuttle missions have come come with this spacer issue. That is the question I want answered.

NASA says it exceeds their safety standards is NASA scared of their own shadow now. Flying into space comes with great risk we all know that and because these tiles are so sensitive how many will be potentially damaged from this maneuver. [NASA]

I have a question for you or anyone else. I pray that this does not happen but let’s say it does. Let’s say that the space shuttle can’t come back down to earth because they can’t fix the problem and it is too dangerous. How would they get back home? Would NASA send up Atlantis? I know that they will fix the problem. There are some smart people over there.
