Unique RSS Applications

If trends continue, it will not be long before people are going to be serving ads in their RSS feeds in more unique ways. Advertisements must be generating some serious cash. Personally will start removing feeds that start putting to many in and get on my nerves. for jamming them in one a day is fine but every other post being a advertisement pisses me off. Having read MarketingStudies.net for quite awhile now, really appreciating many of the ideas they come up with, and their great podcasts (albeit with low sound quality), it appears clear that some people are super intent on “monetizing” RSS in any number of ways. I know I don’t mind Google’s contextual advertising, especially given how unobtrusive it is. I find it interesting to see who is advertising for certain keywords. (like “RSS” often brings up Pluck adds. I can’t stand Pluck!) If the same principle of unobtrusiveness were applied, I wouldn’t mind a text-only contextual advertisement once every 10 to 20 headlines in a feed. I’m sure that standard would be fast overcome, but I’d stop subscribing to feeds that passed it.

Advertising in Podcasting has managed to be kept low-key in some cases. Chris Pirillo keeps them short, Dawn and Drew put them in at the end and always conclude their shows with some cute little noise-thing after the ad, and GeekNewsCentral does ads in the bizarre but kind of charming way that you do! So I’ll bet that RSS advertising could be done well too. Of course it could be an awful mess!
