Former MP3.com chief and Linspire CEO Michael Robertson will reenter the music world next week with MP3tunes, a service that promises music without DRM restrictions.
The announcement will be made next week at the Linspire Desktop Summit, where a new VOIP company, SwitchVox, will also be launched. Robertson’s other venture, SIPphone, will also introduce a $39 device designed to facilitate Internet calling.
Robertson said he’s not worried about the record labels and their requirements for rights-management technology. At the time it was sold, Robertson said, MP3.com attracted top artists, like Maroon 5 and Linkin Park. “I think the labels are interested in one thing: selling,” he said. “If you build the audience they will come.”
