Well my wife was sick last night and we let one of our favorite programs record to DVR. Being it was a two part series we really wanted to see the program. Sure enough near the end the DVR recording ended and we missed the very end of the show.
I was as pissed off as the control freak wife on the television program. So I am going to call out a challenge to all DVR manufactures you all need to by default start recording 10 minutes before the start of a show and continue 10 minutes after the show.
I knew that networks were doing this and suspected we were going to get screwed when we started watching the program.
Well I can vote with my remote control we blocked that channel and now we will no longer watch any of their content. I am sure their advertisers will be happy to hear that.
Well, while this may be a new tactic for some networks it reminds me of TBS (I think) who always starts and ends their shows 5 minutes after. I never understood why they did this and they have been doing it for a decade at least.
Overlapping shows, etc. is the exact reason why my girlfriend’s dad still prefers VCRs over DVRs. Most of the shows I tape are on SciFi and are back to back, but if I am ever recording a show and it is not back to back with something else I set my ReplayTV to start 5 minutes early and end 5 minutes late.
If any company tried to make my life more difficult then they end up on the bottom of the list. While I disagree with JimK’s comment about this, I do think you should be at least naming them, blogs have a lot more power than most people think.
If your recording over laping shows sure you have a issue but thats why the software would have to be smart. How often are you recording two shows at once? When you are then you dont get +10 -10 simple as that. Plus most DVR’s have 2 receivers and the boxes already warn you if you are about to cancel recording when your recording two shows. This is very feasible and in most cases simple
You should know, running a tech blog, that you need multiple tuners in order to guarantee that you get back-to-back recording if you have time overlaps. Your suggestion can’t be implemented until we FIRST get dual or triple tuners in every DVR. Since so many use the DVR in conjunction with a cable box, you will need a seperate box for each tuner.
See how unfeasible your suggestion is? Satellite can handle it. Even digital cable, though, cannot.
Also, now that you’ve locked out that channel, they never have a reason to listen to you. Ever again. You’re lost to them. The smarter move is to keep track of the advertisers for your favorite show, national AND local, and complain to THEM.
