Microsoft Support of Win NT Dead on Arrival Dec 31 2004

What isn’t broke don’t fix is my motto. I have a Windows NT Server sitting here that hammers away 24/7 and has been doing so for the past 9 years. Yes folks 9 years. I replaced a power supply and upgraded the CPU twice from leftovers of personal machines I have upgraded. It works so well that it goes months without having to be re-booted and it serves up 20,000 web pages a day along with e-mail, telnet, ftp, nntp and a host of other services without missing a heartbeat.

The commercial firewall I purchased 6 years ago has never allowed a hacker to break in. Part of the security success I have had with the server is I run a 2nd part web server and variety of other services.

So I am not at all happy that Microsoft is putting the support hatchet into the most reliable server I have ever owned. No matter what I am going to run the thing until it dies. I am just hoping the commercial companies who will still be getting updates will see fit to release those updates Microsoft is going to keep to themselves on the Net.

Many of you would say spend the money upgrade, I say screw that I work hard for my dollar and value every penny that I can save. Why upgrade when the machine does everything it needs to do. [BetaNews]
