It has been a significant amount of time since I have designed any websites and being I have nothing but time on my hands I decided to teach myself how to use CSS in my new website designs. I have always relied on Hotmetal Pro and the last version that Softquad put out before being taken over by Corel was version 6. This version has a real straight forward CSS editor but the editor is 2-3 years old.
I am in the market for a new CSS editor and HTML editor. Those of you that are up to speed in the design world I am open for suggestions. I am only going to be building a handful of personal sites so I don’t want to spend thousands of dollars for new software tools. Suggestions Please.
TopStyle is all you need: perfect, standards-based, clean CSS and xHTML coding and validating capabilities. $80
If you’ve got more money available, you could compliment TS with HomeSite, from Macromedia. $100
CSE HTML Validator is an alternative 2nd choice – awesome validating capability, and checks for accessibility, usability, and more. $70 for the Standard version; $130 for the Pro version (recommended)
If you want a single program: get TopStyle.
If you’re not worried about a totally GUI tool, I’d also throw in with the TopStyle crowd. Although traditionally known as a CSS editor, the latest version, TopStyle 3(.1) also has an excellent (X)HTML editor built in. Cracking program, with excellent support from the author. You can download an evaluation copy and “try before you buy”, but once you do you’ll almost certainly shell out for it :)
