For many months now DirecTV has been sending what many consider a extortion letter. DirecTV claims that by owning a certain types of card that can be used for variety of reasons including unlocking the DirecTV controllers. In lawsuit against such companies that sell these cards DirecTV was able to obtain list of consumers who purchased the equipment. They then cross-checked the list and if the consumer was a DirecTV user then they were sent a subpoena that basically said pay up or we will see you in court.
Obviously people are not real happy about this so it appears that a class action suit has been filed against DirecTV previous legal actions of this type have been thrown out. [eWeek]
