I had to laugh this came to me via e-mail and I had to just shake my head and wonder what idiot did this. DirectTV sometimes sets up underground hacking sites in a “sting” operation. About 6 months ago a hot dss underground site called dssprophet.com came on the scene, BUT when you run a “whois” you’ll see who owns that site:
Registrant: DIRECTV
Registrar: Dotster (http://www.dotster.com)
Domain Name: DSSPROPHET.COM
Administrative Contact: nelly_kardakova@dc.kirkland.com
Technical Contact: prophet, ph0nix ph0nix@dssprophet.com
1-800-347-3288
It appears that they figured that people would not check them out. These individuals who have been buying smart-card technology for the purpose of hacking a DSS system have been paranoid in the first place. I wonder if they actually caught anyone.
I’ve heard that direct tv has been able to stop piracy for now, anyway. Is this true? You used to be able to purchase the cards that expanded your cable, but lateley, I’ve been hearing, it is no longer available. Anyone have any info?
DSSProphet.com was not owned by Direct TV, it was a legitimate (although maybe not legal) underground satilite website. If you had done your research, you would have known that. Just ask anyone in the underground satilite community and they would have recognized the name “DSS Prophet” as a program used by pirates to keep informed on anti-piracy efforts made by Direct TV and other DSS companies. However, DirectTV did do a “sting” operation which took over dssprophet.com among many other dss-related websites and replaced them with DirecTVs Anti-Piracy site. That is why it is shown to be owned by Direct TV on the whois database today.
The reason that dssprophet is NOW shown as being owned by DTV is because DirecTV just shut down their site in July. You’ll notice if you were to go to dssprophet.com now that it simply goes to DirecTVs Anti-Piracy site. NOT to dssprophet anymore.
