Windows 8 Release Preview Leaks

Poor Microsoft just can’t keep anything secret.  Today the Release Preview version of Windows 8, which will be released in the coming days, has leaked out to P2P.  The build, which is labeled 8400, hit bit torrent and is spreading quickly.  Numerous sites have already posted screenshots of the next version of the operating system.

The build, which is offically 8400.0.WINMAIN_WIN8RC.120518-1423_X64FRE_CLIENT_ZH-CN-HRC_CCSA_X64FRE_ZH-CN_DV5, contains 3 new Metro-style apps from Microsoft – News, Sports, and Travel – as well as built-in support for Adobe Flash.  The web site Winunleaked confirmed the legitimacy of the leaked copy and also provides links if you are so inclined to try it out.  I recommend extreme caution with any such download.

Windows 8 Release Preview is expected to be released in early June and will be available in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions.  If you can’t wait another week then check your P2P client, but make sure you install it on a PC that you don’t mind experimenting with and is insulated from the rest of your network.  Better yet, just wait a few days and get it directly from Microsoft.

nVidia and Windows 8 Tablets

nvidia logoAs you have almost certainly already heard, one of the big things coming in Windows 8 will be it’s support of ARM processors.  The main feature of the new operating system, though, is the radical new Metro interface.  The Metro Start screen displays a series of “live tiles”.  These are the apps, some of which come with Windows 8, and some which will be installed by the user from the new Windows Store, which are constantly updating with new information.  You could display such things as current weather, Twitter, news, and a lot more on your personalized start screen.

nVidia was at the Consumer Electronics Show last month to show off their Tegra 3 quad-core processor running Windows 8 tablets.  The new chipset allows these tablets to be extremely thin, have longer battery life, and high-resolution graphics.  In the video below you can get a look at a little bit of what they are capable of, such as HD video playback, and full Windows multi-tasking.

The exact specifications and pricing aren’t yet available, but you can learn more by visiting the nVidia site.

ASUS to Show Two New Tablets at CES

asus tablet

ASUS was so excited they couldn’t wait for CES next week.  Vice President Samson Hu laid out the company’s 2012 plans at a press event in Taipei and what he had to say was certainly attention-grabbing.  There were some things that had already been rumored – like an ASUS ARM tablet running Windows 8, which he confirmed will be coming by the end of this year.  But he also let everyone know about two new tablets that are coming a lot sooner than that.  In fact they will be shown at CES in just a few days.

At CES we will see a 7 inch tablet called the ASUS Eee Memo Pad and a new, as yet unnamed, 10 inch tablet with a high-resolution screen.  With the 10 inch tablet it’s unclear if this will be a completely new device or a revamped version of the ASUS Prime.  ASUS has beefed up their development department in hopes of reaching their goal of 6 million tablets sold in 2012.  With a combination of Android and Windows 8 tablets coming this year they just may reach that goal.
