Displaylink talks about new chipsets

displaylinkEvery year Displaylink stops by to visit with TPN during CES in Las Vegas, and this year was no different. A company rep visited the set to talk about what is new for 2014.

First up, there is a new chipset, the 5000 series, which can handle 4K video (Ultra HD) over USB. That may sound crazy, but the company has stepped up compression in order to make this possible. It’s a rather complicated process, but it’s explained in the video below. Next, was a new 3950 chipset. This makes possible the ability to expand both Android devices and Chromebooks out to a full desktop, via docking. All of this takes place through adapters manufactured by Displaylink, and the one shown off in the video is expected to retail for less than $90.

MobileMonitor Presents Monitor2Go & Field Monitor Pro With Keypad Portable 15″ USB Monitors

Lawrence Pensack presents two portable 15.4″ inch USB monitors that are designed to extend the desktop real estate of laptop computers. Monitor²Go, which is available in May, is a USB monitor that sells for $279 dollars.

The Field Monitor Pro With Keypad is available now and sells for $289, includes an integrated numeric keypad. Both monitors are DisplayLink Certified.

It is possible to daisy-chain up to 6 of these monitors for maximum high-performance portable screen real estate. Both units fold up into the shape of standard laptop computers to go into standard laptop bags and weigh about 4 pounds. They are powered with their own power adapters.

Displaylink full HD with USB 3.0

Displaylink allows you to connect another monitor from your computer via USB. The cool thing about Displaylink with USB 3.0 is that you can drive a bus powered monitor with no power cord. So essentially you have a bus powered monitor, that is connected only by a USB 3.0 cable to a computer that has a USB 3.0 bus and no other cable. Displaylink has been driving bus powered monitors for a long time but generally not one that supports HD.

Displaylink technology can now be found on a number of monitors in the marketplace. You should always look for the displaylink logo on the packaging or visit the displaylink website for links to a variety of the vendors that support the technology. While USB 3.0 has not had wide deployment yet this is an indication of what will be available in coming months as more computer manufactures get on the USB 3.0 bus.
