America Online is opening their services to non-members in an attempt to become a major online portal like MSN or Yahoo. Their first step was earlier this week when they announced that their AIM instant messaging service was opening up to third party software. Now they announced that AOL would start a webmail service for both members and non-members called AOL Mail on the Web.

MyMD.com has a unique idea, medicine via email, IM, and video chat. In the past, the company's doctors had talked with patients over the phone, but now MyMD is giving 1,000 of its top member doctors iBooks and iSight cameras, hoping they will be able to do some of their consulting via video conference. Since many Doctors are dropping their patients with minor issues, and many patients are waiting in long lines to see a Doctor for a few precious minutes, MyMD decided to try an online approach to diagnosis.
I upgraded one of my network file servers, yesterday. I replaced a hard disk that was setting off occasional error notices, and, while while I was at it, I replaced the current operating system (Mandrake Community 10.1) with Knoppix 3.7. Knoppix is the Linux distribution that I use in class to demonstrate how simple Linux is to use, because Knoppix is a fully-functional operating system with common applications that can boot from a single CD. So, with the bootable CD, I can quickly convert any computer to Linux without the risk of deleting any existing files from the Windows operating system.
Starting today, many users of new, unregistered copies of Microsoft Windows will have to make a phone call in order to activate the software's license. In a move to curb piracy of its flagship operating system, Microsoft has disabled the Internet activation alternative, now requiring these users to orally confirm their use of the product.
