I talk about this once in a while because I think all of us need a good whack on the head from time to time. Imagine you go out for dinner and you come home and your hard-drive in your computer has decided it has had enough spinning at 7200 RPM’s and will soon become another table top talk piece.
Now imagine that you had not backed up that hard-drive in over a year. [www.decafbad.com]
Sidenote: I have a laptop hard-drive sitting here for replacement as I know the one that is keeping the notebook I am writing on is gonna roll over on me at anytime. Prepared as I can be but it will still suck.
Todd,
Oh, haven’t I been there before…If I had a nickel for every hard drive that has died on me I would be retired (again)…And another penny for all the backups that haven’t worked. I still have 360 KB 5.25 inch floppys and 720 KB 3.5 inch floppys by the box load with backups along with tapes that didn’t work when I needed them !!!
My VAIO recently ran out of room on the hard drive (Surprise ! it was only 40 Gig!) and I agonized for over two weeks on how to replace it without having to go through the dreaded microsoft activation process and installing all my apps all over again. I finally bit the bullet and went out to CompUSA and bought Acronis True Image 8.0 and blew an image of my laptops drive in 30 minutes and within an hour had a new 100 gig drive up and running in my laptop…. Not many programs impress me like this one did….
Now if I could bring myself to make an image of all my hard drives once a week I would have nothing to worry about (Right!)… I do make an image of my work laptop onto a spare hard drive at the end of each road trip….Hopefully that will keep the Blood Pressure down …
..Steve..
