What threat? Cable Vs. The Known

I read an article today that surprised me. For those of us on the New Media forefront the poll results of a group of cable executives at a recent conference shows how narrow there focus really is. They were asked to vote on the following.

“What or who will be your biggest day-to-day competition in three years from today?”

Their results are as follows!

DirecTV–37 percent
Google–0 percent
Municipal Wi-Fi–10 percent
Something not yet invented–25 percent

Know remember these are Cable companies who in large part also own the broadband lines into people’s homes. They should be able to tell by there traffic what there users are doing today. I bet if they really looked close they would see the amount of time people are spending online and the type of media they are consuming.

IPTV is where everything is headed we are already seeing networks putting their content online and the number of selections are going to grow in huge proportions. Don’t rule Google out especially if they buy a pile of spectrum that is going to be able sold soon. But not even be asked about IPTV is so narrow focused.

Would cable companies be able to survive without their cash cow cable television subscriptions. [doc.weblogs.com] [publications.mediapost.com]
