Kicking up Security without breaking the bank?

I have gotten to the point here in my business operation that I want to make sure that I am not the next company reporting that my databases have been hacked and all of my customers and associates information has been stolen.

I am a very small business which at this point consist of my wife, Chantal in marketing and me. Having firewalls on the desktops and a router from Linksys does not leave me feeling very secure. So I want to install a good hardware based firewall that will work with the cable modem configuration we have here.

I am willing to spend some money but would like to keep it under a $1000.00 if possible. But security is a major concern and I want to add another level here so as we get ready to add staff and desktop I want to secure the internal network from the outside without going broke doing it as a small startup business we have to weigh the options carefully. Any suggestions?
