Microsoft Unveils New Pocket PC Software

As a PocketPC owner myself, I am lovin’ all this attention to PocketPC’s. More gadgets, baby!

“SEATTLE – Microsoft Corp. unveiled new software for handheld devices Monday as part of its efforts to boost market share for advanced mobile phones, personal digital assistants and other “smart” devices.

The new version of “Pocket PC” software carries the name Windows Mobile 2003 to help link it with the company’s Windows operating system, said Ed Suwanjindar, product manager with Microsoft’s Mobility Group.

The software can automatically detect and connect devices to the Internet if there is a wireless (news – web sites) WiFi network in place. Many coffee shops, copy centers and other locations are installing such networks.

While not much has changed on the surface, the new OS is markedly different under the hood. Microsoft has moved the operating system to a new underlying core, using Microsoft’s Windows CE.Net 4.2 code base, as opposed to Windows CE 3.0, which powered prior versions of Pocket PC. Microsoft also has added new support for keyboards, although no new keyboard-based devices are being announced Monday.” [Yahoo! News and News.com]
