Copy a rented DVD to a VHS Tape

In Japan they do not get wrapped around the copyright laws as bad as they do in the United States. I have been playing with a Japanese combination DVD/VHS Player/Recorder that does some pretty cool things.

1. It will play any region’s DVD (Shock #1)
2. It will record the rented DVD on the Internal VHS (Shock #2)

Now that is what I call fair use. The price for these are reasonable $300.00 for a unit that is absolutely loaded. Now why can’t we have these in the US. If any of you have ever tried to record a rented DVD onto a VHS Tape you will have found that you cannot.

I am sure there are some DVD/VHS recording hacks out there. I would love for someone to provide me such a link. I need to get over their and get me one of these, but I do not want to be stuck in customs on the way back with some over zealous customs agent. I am sure there is some obscure law out there that prevents me from legally bringing one of these things home.
