Everyone probably knows that Google has grown from a startup search engine into one of the largest and most profitable companies in the world, but if you begin checking into where some of their properties rank you will be amazed by just how massive and powerful they are. The fact is that 23 of the world’s top 100 web sites are Google properties.
We’re not talking just Google.com and related home pages in other countries such as Google.co.uk and Google.de, although 17 of those appear on the list as well. Add in some of their top properties like Google.com and YouTube which are numbers one and three respectively, while Blogger appears at number 44. GoogleUserContent.com is also surprisingly high at number 22. You can view the full rankings at Alexa. Of course, none of this takes into account things like gmail.com and picasa.com which both redirect to the google.com URL.
All of this reminds me of the old video about Google and Amazon merging and taking over the world. If you haven’t seen it, you can watch “googlezon” below…just for fun, of course…
Terrific vid! One that I wish EVERY kid in high school should watch and … their parents and grandparents! And maybe have a more simple version for younger children. Shows us ‘how it began’ and ‘where it went’ and gives a glimpse of what might be. What IS next? I DON’T KNOW! But whatever it is, I betcha it will be fantabulous … or frightening beyond belief. Flip of the coin on that one!
It will rest in the hands of those in power and that sure is not the typical ‘end user’ so there is some trepidation about ‘next.’ We peons use it, support it, pay for it but have no control, and though our input is derived from our use, is it really about US? I don’t think so, not entirely anyway. But then, nothing has changed in that equation since the rise of civilizations. We’re just the cattle the aliens are supposed to consume (remember that one?! LOL) The only truth in that oddball conspiracy theory is this: the ‘aliens’ are human.
