Forget a brainstorm I had Microsoft charging $200,000 for one years NT4 Support

The brainstorm I had was to form a bogus company then raise enough money via donations to pay for 1 more year of NT4 Server support that Microsoft was offering to corporations. I figured we would just give away all the patches that they released to those that donated or so we thought.

Well Microsoft announces today that to get that type of support we need about $200,000! Well it looks to me like Microsoft really wants to stick it to companies that have been quite happily running NT4, many companies will still be happy after Jan 1st because those servers sit behind a corporate firewall and are in minimal danger of being compromised. But for people like me who run a website on a NT4 Server with a 3rd party web server are out of luck and time.

As I have said in the past I am going to continue to run the server till hackers find a way past the commercial firewall or infiltrate the applications that are hosted on it. I have a gold backup copy of everything on it and it runs like a champ so I am not worried about lost data nor income.

Others will not be so lucky and will have to spend millions upgrading to the latest hardware and newest software. That’s one thing about technology hang around long enough and everything becomes obsolete. [ZDNet]
