I sure like the guys over at Techdirt they seem to be able to dig up some of the gems I miss. Most of us are on broadband from a major provider, this is not a inclusive statement. As I have spent so much time overseas over the past 10 years and living in Hawaii that when I went home to see the family 5-6 years ago I was quite shocked. I found out the cable broadband they where on was run by the city.
The rates where cheap and the business connection prices where very low. I immediately re-located a dozen servers from California to that location. Today most of my servers minus this site are in rack space in the small town that I grew up in. I pay a VERY low rate to host them their.
The brand name broadband companies are not to happy about the local municipalities offering broadband and locking them out of some cities. They have taken their case all the way to the Supreme Court, they want in on the action as these cities who are doing broadband well are also doing it cheaper. This is one of those situations in which I hope the big boys are kept locked out. I would prefer my servers to continue to have superior support by people I grew up with and at a hosting rate that is one of the lowest in the country. [TechDirt]
