Ensure that you only install updates that you can verify are coming directly from the Microsoft support website. Downloading and installing patches and supposed fixes from sites other than Microsoft can be dangerous.
There is a patch floating around that has a virus in it that is not a Microsoft release. So like any software you install trust the source. [Tech Seekers]
