Gateway Ties Unsold PCs Into Grid Supercomputer

All those lonely PCs waiting to be sold now have something to do: Tuesday, Gateway unveiled a plan to link nearly 8,000 PCs in hundreds of its retail stores in a grid-computing environment, and make the horsepower available to business, government agencies, research firms and universities.

Gateway’s Processing On Demand service maxes out at 14-teraflop performance, which makes it, according to a Top 500 Supercomputer Site ranking, the second-most powerful supercomputer on the planet. [Internet Week]
