ECOVACS is Cleaning Up CES 2017 with UNIBOT

EcovacsWho’s ready to leave the housework to someone else? I know I sure am. Unfortunately, my life choices haven’t really worked out in such a way that I can afford to pay for housekeeping. Regardless, we are now truly entering the World of Tomorrow here in the 21st century. And that means robots. More specifically, robots that will clean your house. The future is indeed a wonderful time to be alive!

Robotics company ECOVACS returned to CES this year to show off its latest creation, UNIBOT:

UNIBOT combines floor cleaning and air purification with aspects of household monitoring and security, as well as the control of various household devices in the owner’s home. The new home management robot combines quality and efficiency with cutting edge technologies from existing floor cleaning modules, home management modules, air purification modules and humidification modules into a single, programmable, versatile unit.

So, this UNIBOT is like a Roomba combined with an air filter and a humidifier? That’s a pretty versatile thing to have around the modern home:

…floor cleaning robot, and is further enhanced with other modules to create a totally customizable, intelligent and novel customer experience. This allows ECOVACS to advance to the next stage in its long-term plan – that is, household appliances which are no longer just single-function tools, but are now multi-functional home management systems.

Looks like UNIBOT isn’t the full solution for all of your housekeeping needs. But it’s definitely a step in the right direction. No information is yet available as to when UNIBOT will be on the market or how much it’ll cost.

PuddingBeanQ is a Robotic Companion for Kids at CES 2017

RooboOne of the promises of the 21st century is a world full of robots. While we haven’t exactly made it to that automaton-filled vision yet, artificially intelligent technology is becoming more and more commonplace in our everyday lives. This has definitely been evident during this year’s CES show. One of the latest robot-inspired devices to debut at the trade show is PuddingBeanQ, billed as a robotic companion for kids:

…small robot, PuddingBeanQ, that can answer those innumerable “why” questions from young children at the CES 2017. According to company sources, PuddingBeanQ answers the questions under eights ask of life, the universe and everything. It also teaches music and basic maths and will understand up to 50 languages.

PuddingBeanQ harnesses the power of the internet to access various types of stories and education material. This large knowledge base allows the little robot to keep kids’ minds engaged, helping them to grow and learn:

Roobo has established a strategic partnership with Nuance to integrate learning and data-driven AI to create a conversational interface and encourage human interaction.

PuddingBeanQ has rich, human-like emotions that appeal to young kids and will react to human touch, plus instigates interactive games that encourage movement.

Roobo is expecting to officially launch the PuddingBeanQ product line in March of 2017. No word yet on pricing for this robot.

Ecovacs Robotics Deebot DA60 is Cleaning Up at CES

DeebotCleaning house. It’s almost as inevitable as death and taxes. Unless of course, you’ve got a helper that can cut thru the tedium of the task. Robotic household cleaners aren’t new. Many devices have been devised over the last 15 years to vacuum, wash, and sweep messy floors. Ecovacs has been working in this space for awhile and it’s bringing its latest robotic helper to CES 2016 in the form of the Deebot DA60, nicknamed “Slim.”

Slim is so-named because of it’s somewhat diminutive stature. Measuring only two inches tall, the Deebot Slim is a smart robotic vacuum designed for use on bare floors. The device is smart enough to detect stairs as well as objects in its path, so it can be used in almost any environment. Slim is designed to automatically clean once per day without having to be manually activated. That means you can really “set it and forget it” when it comes to floor cleaning.

Deebot Slim features a no-tangle direct suction system that automatically adjusts to uneven surfaces as it moves thru the environment. The robo cleaner works great as a vacuum but it can also pull mop duty thru the application of the included mop attachment and microfiber pad.

The Deebot Slim is on display at the Ecovacs Robotics booth in the Sands Expo Center, booth #72545 during CES 2016.

VEX Robotics Ant by HEXBUG

Hexbug LogoMy children love their Hexbug Nanos and I doubt a few days go past without the distinctive buzz and rattle of the bugs banging round their habitats. It’s amazing what a fairly simple machine can get up to and the entertainment it brings. Their motion is surprisingly realistic too.

Older children and grown-ups will enjoy Hexbug’s more advanced robots, in particular the Vex Robotics Ant, a remote controlled robot with an autonomous mode. In the latter function, the Ant will use its bump sensors on the head and tail to veer away from obstacles and generally scurry about, scaring household pets.

Hexbug Ant

The Ant has over 60 programming variations that can be adjusted using switches on the robot so it’s quick and easy to see the changes in behaviour without having to learn any programming. Assembly is required with 150 snap together pieces but that’s half the fun!

The Hexbug range has moved into fingerboards too, with the Tony Hawk Circuit Board. That’s their pun, not mine. This set comes with a power axle and remote control to drive the board round the skate park.

Tony Hawk Circuit Board

Available from major toy retailers everywhere, the Vex Robotics Ant has an RRP of GB£49.99 and the Tony Hawk Circuit Board comes in at GB£14.99. Definitely good gifts for Fathers Day – if my wee ones are reading, I’d like an Ant please.

Combat Creatures Attacknid at CES

Combat Creatures' AttacknidThe mechanised carnage and wanton destruction of Battlebots and Robot Wars is great fun but you need some serious robotics chops to build that level of machine. The Attacknid is an affordable toy alternative from from Combat Creatures – Andy McCaskey finds out more.

The Attacknid is a remote-controlled insect-like robot with a modular gun that fires discs or balls. The premise is simple…you and a friend (or friends) control the robots, shooting at each other’s machine. Three hits to the “battle brain” of the robot and it’s dead. Lots of fun and I can imagine this will be a great Christmas present.

Available in the UK now and will be coming to the USA in the fall for around $100.

Moneual Silver Care Robot Air Purifier and Emergency Assistant

Targeted at independent living for older people, Moneual‘s Silver Care Robot is an air purifier that moves around the home to clean the air and improve the air quality, much like a Roomba does for dirt. But the robot also monitors the vital signs of an owner who is wearing wristwatch-type monitor. In the event of emergency, the robot can summon assistance via a wireless internet connection.

Built on Microsoft’s Windows 7 with a touch screen, the user can access simple functions such as playing music or making a voip call.

Available later in 2011 for over $8000.
