The Apple M7 Co-Processor: What it Is, What it Does

Posted by J Powers at 11:14 AM on September 11, 2013

Apple-M7Last time I had to deal with co-processors was in the 90′s when I put in a 386SX/DX combo into a PC. Technically, co-processors are in your computer still – just as one chip. However, Apple has separated the processors once again with the iPhone 5S. The A7 and the M7 processor.

The A7 processor will be the primary processing unit for your iPhone. A chip that brings the smartphone to 64-bit processing, the A7 will be able to give you some great gameplay while managing your apps and even using the muli-task features of iOS7.

The M7 is going to handle the accelerometer, gyroscope and compass information. This instantly turns your phone more into a pedometer, heart-rate monitor, location tracker and more.

The M7 runs at lower power so it doesn’t drain your battery when you are on a walk or run. It can also free up CPU time from the A7 chip so location-based apps work a little better.

Expect the healthcare industry to utilize this chip as they put out more apps that can monitor your health. Companies like Fitbit and Nike Fuelband can utilize this chip for their exercise apps. If an iWatch is in the works, it could possibly have monitors that would report straight to the M7. As for location tracking, the M7 will be able to geo-tag photos and video better.

Ultimately, with this co-processor, Apple has been able to tout a 40x difference in speed and 56x graphics difference from the original iPhone. It even is close to doubling the speed of a iPhone5 (from the chart Apple provided at the event).

The 5S breaks some new boundaries. The M7 chip looks to give location tracking and healthcare apps the ability to build strong programs that help in your everyday life. If it all comes together right, the iPhone 5S could be a major shift in the mobile computing market.

Introducing the iPhone 5S(ame)

Posted by Alan at 6:49 AM on September 9, 2013

Apple may have slowed down in innovation department lately, favoring litigation instead, but one area where the company has excelled is in lending itself to parody. After last year’s countless videos and images of an iPhone that resembled a bean pole, the new 5S is set to be announced and becoming the subject of comedians before even being unveiled.

The latest video purports to be a group of Apple employees discussing the next-generation of the popular mobile device. The actors do an excellent job of playing the parts of the prototypical Apple hipsters. This is a production YouTube’s Matthias, who has previously posted popular and comical pieces in the past.

I will not spoil the fun, you can’t watch the three-minute clip as it truly needs to be seen to be appreciated. You can check out the clip posted below.

Could Apple iPads, iPhone Get Banned? Apple Loses Ruling vs. Samsung

Posted by J Powers at 7:19 AM on June 5, 2013

Apple iPad 3

In an interesting turn, the US International Trade Commission ruled that Apple violated Samsung patents regarding technology that sends information over wireless networks. If an appeals court cannot overturn or presidential veto (which has to happen within 60 days), certain Apple products would be barred from AT&T’s network.

This ruling does not affect 3rd or 4th generation iPad, iPhone5, iPhone 4S or iPad mini (These models are on or have option for 4G/LTE). It does affect iPhone 4, 3GS along with 1st and 2nd Gen iPads with 3G (aka iPad1 and iPad2).

Since the models that could be banned are older models, many are writing this ban off. All iPhone models in the ban are available for upgrade anyway and a report last year on Gigaom said that only 1 out of 10 iPads sold were 3G models (mostly in the 64GB flavor).

It’s a small victory for  Samsung in the patent wars against Apple – even though the blow is more like a mosquito bite to the leg.

New Tiltpod Mobile Articulating Stand for the iPhone 5

Posted by Alan at 12:53 PM on April 10, 2013

These days a smartphone may still not be the same as a digital camera, especially an SLR, but they are certainly not bad ways to snap an image while on the go. In fact, the devices even have tripods specially built for them so you can grab steady images, as well as time-lapse and more.

Now, at this week’s NAB show, Tiltpod has introduced a brand new one for the iPhone . According to the company, ” [the] tripod troubles…we’ve all been there.  That stressful game where you try to balance your expensive iPhone on a rock, a fence, leaned up against books—anywhere really.  Just so you can put your camera timer on, and jump in the photo,” says Chris Johnson, Founder of BiteMyApple.  “More often than not, we are left with a poorly framed or cut-off photo or, in the worst case, a damaged phone.  Well, the tiltpod changes the way we capture our memories”.

Tiltpod

The new device is “0.2 ounces and only 2″ by 1.4″ by 0.5″ in size. The compact design features a nickel-plated magnetic micro positioning pivot for maximum range of motion and precision control.  It works with or without the included iPhone 5 case.

The non-skid base allows the user to quickly adjust and frame the camera for the perfect shot.  It keeps the tiltpod and the attached iPhone secure on any surface including rocks and wood.  The magnet is even strong enough to attach to a magnetic surface such as a metal railing or a car hood.  Simply tilt, point and shoot.

The Tiltpod comes with a magnetic base, iPhone adapter and key ring.  It comes in black or white, and is available for $29.99 at www.bitemyapple.co.

Memoto Selected as Finalist for SXSW Accelerator Competition

Posted by JenThorpe at 9:49 PM on March 5, 2013

MemotoMemoto is a Swedish startup company that began as a Kickstarter project in 2012. They are the creators of the Memoto Lifelogging Camera. It is a tiny device that allows users to not only capture, but also share, whatever special moments of their life that they choose to. The idea was to make a camera that was small enough so that it wouldn’t get in the way. The camera allows people to organically capture the small, but important, moments of their lives.

The Memoto Lifelogging Camera takes 5 megapixel pictures. It comes in Memoto Orange, Graphite Gray, and Arctic White. Clip the camera onto your clothing, and it will start taking pictures for you at a rate of 2 photos per minute. When you want to stop taking photos, just put the camera down or put it into your pocket.

Those photos are then safely stored on Memoto’s storage service. There are Memoto apps for both iPhone and Android that will automatically organize the photos on a timeline for you. The Memoto Lifelogging Camera has GPS and records time data, so you won’t have to remember the name of the restaurant you went to while using the camera. It will have the name recorded for you. From there, you can easily share your photos on Facebook. Memoto is currently in the pre-launch phase. Their first edition is expected to ship in April of 2013.

The Memoto Lifelogging Camera has been selected as a finalist in the Innovative Web Technologies category for the 5th Annual SXSW Accelerator competition. The SXSW event takes place from March 11th – 13th, 2013. On March 12th, judges will announce a winner to each of the categories. Their decision will be revealed on March 13th at 6:00 p.m. in the Austin Convention Center in Room 10A/B. Memoto will be presenting in the Accelerator competition in the Innovative Web Technologies at 3:30 on the fourth floor of the Downtown Austin Hilton.

Posted by Andrew at 6:49 PM on February 23, 2013

0001028_freed_iphone_5_cherry_wood_260Although the name might be new, Evutec have been around for over fifteen years, producing luxury cases for smartphones and tablets from leather and wood. Andy and Scott find out more about the cases and the creative process from David, one of Evutec’s designers.

Evutec have a wide range of cases for smartphones and tablets, including Apple, Samsung, Blackberry and Motorola devices. Offered in a luxury range of materials, particularly fine wood veneers and DuPont’s Aramid (aka Kevlar), these are high-end cases beautifully made. Prices seem to be in the $20-$50 range depending on material and size. Definitely a little bit more expensive, but this isn’t plastic pretending to be something it’s not.

Posted by Andrew at 5:45 PM on February 23, 2013

Breffo Spiderpodium Smartphone CradleThe Breffo Spiderpodium has been a big success in the past year. The iconic design means that it’s instantly recognisable and the flexible legs work with all smartphones, not just iPhones, giving it broad appeal. Andy and Scott chat with Patrick about the Spiderpodium and the brand new stand from Breffo.

The original Spiderpodium came in a a couple of basic colours, namely black and white, but has since been offered in a range of much brighter colours, including pink and green. It’s also been supersized in the shape of a larger Spiderpodium for tablets and bigger gadgets. New this year too is a smaller simpler stand made from the same rubber covered metal, which will prop up a smartphone at the ideal viewing angle.

The Spiderpodium is available online for around $20.
