Earth911 Recycling

Jennifer Berry from the Web site Earth911 talked about the Earth911 site and their iPhone and iPad apps. Earth911 is the nations largest recycling center and has been in business for over 20 years. Once you are on the site you enter the item you want to recycle and then your location and Earth911 will tell who in your area will recycle the product. You can also do your search through their free iPhone app called iRecycle . On the app you can check to see if there are any events in the area. They also offer some great articles about recycling and other green issues. The Ipad app has an almost real-time map of what people are searching to recycle across the country, as the person enters the item they are trying to recycle and their location the search will pop up on the map. They also offer a hotline for those who rather use that method.

According to Jennifer Berry Earth911 is big into educating the consumer on the benefits of recycling. They work with states and local governments to make recycling easier for everyone. She said that she believed that the three states with the most searches were California, New York and Texas. On the site there are several great articles not only about recycling, but about the Detroit Auto Show using local produce and even an article on the debate about clotheslines among many more.

Siloink Ink Cartridge Refill System

I often discount do it yourself cartridge refill systems, one they are messy and two the ink quality is generally not the great. I was introduced to the Siloink refill system at CES 2011 and was very impressed by the ink quality / print quality and low cost to refill cartridges.

With Cartridge refills at about $5.00 a cartridge it is definitively cheaper than even refilling at your local office supply store. This is a great way to save the number of ink cartridges going into the landfill as well. Please pay attention and make sure when you order on their website that you purchase the refillable cartridges as that makes the most sense for consumers. The only thing that is weird is their implementation for high volume printing as their installation requirements will not work for a home owner.

GoalZero Portable Solar Charging Solutions!

Green was another big theme again at CES 2011 and GoalZero had a full line of portable recharging products. I have often been skeptical of these types of devices but it is obvious that GoalZero know what they are doing and use a very logical approach to their entire product line. If you want something that will simply charge a phone, or something that will keep a light on all night or charge a laptop they have it and it will scale.

Combining battery storage with solar technology is a great combination and the prices are such that any outdoor person would consider picking up some of their solutions. This is the portable solar powered charging solution that I can endorse without reservation!

MyFord Mobile And Ford Focus Electric Announced

Ford made some major announcements today at CES.  They have unveiled the Ford Focus Electric and a MyFord Touch system that expands even further on the Sync technology.

The big news of a new Ford Focus electric car – the first of 5 electric cars Ford plans to release in the US by 2013 – will help to shape the US car market in the coming years.  They are promising a recharging time of three to four hours at home using the available wall-mounted 240-volt charge station – charging in half the time of the Nissan Leaf.  In keeping with their partnership, the new Focus Electric offers value charging, powered by Microsoft, to help owners in the U.S. charge their vehicles at the cheapest utility rates, lowering the cost of ownership.

Focus Electric provides a special version of MyFord Touch driver connect technology, built especially for electric customers and introduces MyFord Mobile, a smartphone app and website for monitoring key vehicle functions and charge settings while mobile.  Here are some the highlights they are focusing on:

  • Ford has developed the all-new MyFord Mobile app for North America, allowing Focus Electric drivers to remain engaged and in control even when away from the vehicle. It’s part of a strategic approach to make Ford electric car ownership simpler and easier
  • MyFord Mobile works via a smartphone app or secure website to give owners the ability to monitor and control selected vehicle functions anywhere they and the car have connectivity
  • The new app dedicated to Ford plug-in vehicle owners helps remotely monitor and control vehicle charge levels, plan single- or multiple-stop journeys, locate charging stations, pre-heat or cool the car and perform other convenient electric vehicle-specific tasks
  • A value charging feature, powered by Microsoft, allows Ford customers to reduce their electricity costs by taking advantage of off-peak or reduced rates from their utility without a complicated set-up process
  • MyFord Mobile will help Focus Electric owners make smart-trip planning decisions with features powered by MapQuest®, which will maintain the largest database of charging stations

Some of the features provided by MyFord Touch are getting the current projected rate of charge, estimated range, time of charge necessary for certain distances, programming charge times for when utility rates are lowest, locating charging stations, finding the car by creating a route from a mobile phone to the vehicle, alerts regarding charging problems, and remotely locking and unlocking doors.

The app will launch with version available for iPhone, Android, and Blackberry and even features phones with WAP 2.0-supported browsers. The feature also is accessible via a secure Ford website.

The future of electric cars just got a whole brighter.  And the latest upgrades to the Sync system are showing that this technology, not only has a future, but could become the standard in the automotive industry.

GNC-2010-12-20 #636 Not a Top Tech Blogger?

I received an email today from a PR firm that set me off, I talk about it in the show. It is funny when a perfectly good email has three words in it that change the whole dynamic of the mailing, listen in when I talk about the “Top Tech Blogger” attending CES that really in no way deserves that title in any way shape or fashion and everyone that has a clue that got the email will know it. I also talk about how I got pwned, during the podcast awards and the banning of a podcast from participation for life.

Climate Change: A Summary of the Science

The politics of the green movement and the polarity of views have often prevented real debate on climate change from happening.   Each side will reinforce their opinion with selective facts from the data and use every opportunity to ridicule their opposition’s theories.  A great deal of the climate discussion that has appeared in the media has been coloured by specious facts and bad science.

To counter this and open up the debate, the Royal Society has published a 19 page document (.pdf) called, “Climate Change: A Summary of the Science“, which is effectively a primer on the science behind climate change.  It attempts to be a balanced view, with notes on the background science, what is widely agreed, what is still debated, what is not well understood and what developments we can expect.

The Royal Society is an independent “Fellowship of more than 1400 outstanding individuals from all areas of science, mathematics, engineering and medicine, who form a global scientific network of the highest calibre.”  Consequently, I think that we can be confident that the working group setup to produce the document has used a scientific approach to assess the climate change data and present the information fairly.  In several areas, uncertainty is acknowledged.

However, the concluding remarks are fairly clear with regard to the evidence for climate change.
There is strong evidence that changes in greenhouse gas concentrations due to human
activity are the dominant cause of the global warming that has taken place over the last
half century. This warming trend is expected to continue as are changes in precipitation
over the long term in many regions. Further and more rapid increases in sea level are
likely which will have profound implications for coastal communities and ecosystems.”

I would encourage everyone to read this document (there’s only about 11 pages of reading) so that you can understand the science, take part in the debate and help develop the policies in response to climate change.
