Posted by geeknews at 1:21 AM on July 8, 2011

I have a metric ton of tech to get through tonight all of it Tech Gold, the big news is the consortium to take your Internet Service away is you use P2P and download copyright materials. All backed by the administration. Wait till you here about new extradition considerations. I am quite incredulous over some of the news today. Important do not forget about the Space Shuttle launch if weather permits they launch today.

Innovating for a Digital Future

Posted by Andrew at 12:00 PM on June 21, 2011

Over the past year, Deloitte have publish a short series on digital leadership and are wrapping it up with the final edition “Innovating for a Digital Future“.  Each publication looks at the different challenges facing leaders in the digital era particularly in the technology, media and telecoms industries.

This last one examines the challenges around innovation and how it’s possible to be innovative particularly within large organisations that feature heavily in the technology and telecoms arenas. Doing the research for the publication, Deloitte found three unexpected paradoxes.

1. Innovation is a social sport. It is not the preserve of “lone geniuses” yet it requires lone geniuses working effectively with others to make it work.

2. Innovation is somewhat anarchic and organisation can impede it. Innovation rates substantially increase when there is a large population of people, yet large organisations do not appear to gain an innovation premium. The construct of the organisation itself is in many ways anti-innovation.

3. “Good” failure is critical to the innovation process. For innovation to flourish organisations need to embrace failure, yet not many chief execs would survive if they made failure a virtue.

The research further suggests that leaders need to work across four areas to develop organisations that can successfully innovate.

1. Strategy and vision
2. Environment and culture
3. Organisation and design of work
4. Leadership and talent

Each of these areas is explored over a couple of pages and there are case studies as well. If you’ve done a Degree or Masters in management, you’ll find much of it familiar but there’s the odd nugget in there. For instance, the question is posed, “Innovation should have real monetary value attached to it. How many executives in organisations received bonuses based on innovation metrics?”

Overall, worth spending 15 mins to run through the material and see if there’s anything of interest. Also might be quite a good primer if you are trying to get innovation off the ground in your organisation.

The previous editions, “New Shapes and Sizes” and “Leadership at All Levels“, are still available for download as .pdfs.

Microsoft Buys Skype

Posted by KL Tech Muse at 8:00 PM on May 10, 2011

Today Microsoft announced that it had purchased Skype for 8.5 billion dollars. Skype will be run as a separate business division with in Microsoft and its CEO Tony Bates will report directly to Steve Balmer Microsoft’s CEO. For those of you that are not familiar with Skype it is a soft ware application that allows users to make voice calls and chats over the Internet. Calls that are to other users on the Skype service are free, while calls from Skype to landline or mobile phones do cost a small fee. It had over 663 million register users as of 2010 with 170 million that are active and it continues to grow. According to Microsoft they plan to bring the Skype support to Xbox, Kinect and Windows Phone. They did indicate that Skype will continue to develop and work on other platforms. Whether this remains true only time will tell. There is always the fear that over time development for the other platforms like Linux and the Mac OS X will fall by the wayside and become after thoughts.

One of the biggest problems when a company the size of Microsoft buys a company like Skype is that the smaller company will simply be swallowed up by the Microsoft culture. That what has made Skype popular with users will get lost and the urge to make it more popular with Wall Street will override the users interest. An Ars Technica article also bring up the point that Microsoft already has a its own voice and chat platform Window Live, which has more active users then Skype at 330 monthly active users. So where does Skype fit in, will it be its ability to do Skype to landline calls, which Windows Messenger doesn’t do. No one knows, there was no mention of it at the announcement. The more I think about this the more I believe that the only group that this announcement is good for are those who own stock in Skype. Unfortunately for the users and employee of Skype I don’t see a rosy future. I certainly hope I am wrong. Hopefully Microsoft can use it expertise to improve Skype UI and security.  The last Skype update was to say the least not very popular with most users.  It is possible that Microsoft will do everything it says it will and Skype will become an even better product for everyone.  I am just not holding my breath on it.

AT&T Dead Zones in Hawaii!

Posted by geeknews at 7:24 PM on April 29, 2011

I spend a lot of time in my car here in Hawaii and attempt to do some hands free business calls while I am mobile. It is a great utilization of my time given how bad the traffic is. Today was the final straw, I was disconnected a total of 23 times over a 150 minute period. For brevity sake, I am outlining the worst areas to be caught on the phone. I have no labeled AT&T that using the iPhone in Hawaii anytime you are mobile is now a Business Liability!

The funny thing is my wife who has a T-Mobile phone almost never gets disconnected. I guess that is why AT&T needs to buy T-Mobile, because they cannot keep people connected to their service so they have to buy a company that has better coverage and technology to protect against dropped calls. One thing is obvious AT&T cannot handle switching you from tower to the other. If you gave me a spray paint can, I could mark the areas on the highways where your cell is gonna drop the service is so predictable.

The month is winding down, but I could not be happier the team of writers at GNC have been kicking out some pretty awesome content. The refresh of the show formula so far is working and the feedback so far has been positive. I am on the search for existing talent across the new media space. Do you know of a show that is considered to be at the top of the class in their genre? If so I want to talk to them… Big thanks to the Insiders for all their support and of course the Ohana for being part of the show.

GNC #665 Tech Takes Over Store!

Posted by geeknews at 1:04 AM on April 26, 2011

I hope you have been pleased with the format tweak, while all may not be 100% apparent I have made some major process changes here over the past 2-3 shows that I am going to work very to keep in check. One thing should be obvious slightly shorter show.. 1 hour and 10 minutes +/- 4 minutes is the goal.. Keeps you listening longer and keeps the cream of the crop content in the heart of the show.. Going long is something that grew into a monster that I hope to keep tame..

GNC-2011-03-11 #654 Tsunami Inbound!

Posted by geeknews at 1:39 AM on March 11, 2011

The massive earthquake hits Japan just as I start my show, we are under a Tsunami Warning here in Hawaii with first strike due at 3am local. Based on what has happened in Japan it could be bad. The Ohana watching the show live were feeding me information, kinda weird to talk about a live event in which I knew most of you would be listening post show. Needless to say lots of tech to talk about tonight as well.

Note: My home is 1000 feet above sea level we are safe.
